Sometimes a director can make one all-time great movie and it redeems whatever other garbage they make in their entire career. Beetlejuice is one of those movies.

CzarChasm posted:I've seen this mentioned twice, but wasn't there a dragon in the original animated version? I mean, is it really a big leap to go from "Dragon" to "Magic"? The dragon is magic derived from the ghosts of her ancestors. This reinforces the concept of Bringing Honor to Us All where 'All' is thousands of years of family and history. The witch is...a witch. I guess the difference is one transcends time whereas the other is a witch. Maybe it'll work fine, but the villain was already a great bad guy. Now we have a witch.

Miss Peregrine was a decent premise tacked onto an aggressively mediocre movie that turned into a really stupid one. I kinda enjoyed the first half or so and the basic concept of the time loop and the peculiars before it got really dumb, it feels like Not Tim Burton could have taken it a lot more interesting places. disclaimer, I haven't read the book so it could be equally dumb and unsalvageable, idk

I wish we still got superhero movies with an actual visual style to them, I'd take that over the standard blockbuster sheen any day.

Does Dredd count as a superhero? Also the Burton Batmans are good movies even if they're not particularly good representations of what Batman is "supposed" to be.

Say what you will about Burton's Batmen but at least he got Bruce Wayne right. Rich loner freak who likes to play dress up and with gadgets. Nolan's Wayne is just boring billionaire with some expensive hobbies.

Baron von Eevl posted:Does Dredd count as a superhero? I was gonna say no, because Dredd isn't a hero. But I suppose you could say the same about Batman. Anyway, if we don't count Dredd then the most recent "superhero" movie that's actually visually appealing is probably Punisher: Warzone. Well, live action anyway. Always have to give that caveat when Into the Spiderverse exists.

I think it's Returns that has the shot of Wayne just staring out the window in an unlit room, just sitting there staring. How many hours has he been there? How many days, waiting for the bat signal?

I read the book a couple of years ago, I thought it was pretty good. They changed a lot for the movie and not in ways that made sense or improved anything.

It was probably this thread, but someone broke down the ballroom dance in Batman Returns between Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle and it’s an incredibly well shot and acted scene. Michael Keaton was the best Batman.

The best thing the Arrowverse did was cast Kevin Conroy as Kingdom Come's Batman, thereby making absolute certain that you can never discount him because of some dumb rule like 'wasn't in live action'.

Polaron posted:I mean, it's based on a real story, so any amount of magic at all is already weird. In the original story when she's found out, Mulan just goes right on kicking rear end without the drama of her being left on the mountain, plus she fights and kicks rear end for 12 straight years. Also, most likely she didn't exist because the earliest reference to her is almost 500 years after she lived and she isn't mentioned in a contemporary book called Exemplary Women which is about what you'd expect with that title. But who cares, just give me more sick loving wuxia fights and I'll be happy. It looks like it's going in a very different direction not just from the 1998 Disney movie but also the 2009 live action Chinese movie and the 2013 live action Chinese series, which is good because otherwise we'd get another souless remake like Lion King instead of its own thing.

I haven't seen any of the trailers, but I'm kinda sad there's no dragon. I was wondering how they were going to replace Eddie Murphy. The idea of a tiny lil cgi dragon was kinda the only reason I was thinking of seeing the movie at all.

Batman Returns is a legit great movie in every technical sense. Like, when you look at the movies that came out that year Batman Returns really did deserve nominations for cinematography, production design, and costumes. But because it was a sequel to a Batman movie, it just got a few token nominations for special effects and makeup design.

It's a quick shot after her father asks the ancestors to protect her. But there will be a dragon. The fact they haven't shown more means it is really awful or really awesome.
