Good old BOFH.

In other news, while my company has fired my rear end, it seems to have no intention to actually, yannow, facilitate that transition. Stuff is just moving along as usual (so, poorly) until I'll suddenly not show up one day and... I don't know.

My colleagues are nice but gently caress management, can't wait to be the gently caress out of here. With a bit of luck this week will see a good offer and I'll be out end of next month.

I’m using all Makita 18v tools to build my house, and I don’t have a single complaint with the tools I have. I have 2 chargers and 7 batteries ranging from 2ah to 5ah. My only complaint is that they do not make an 18v framing gun. There are currently only 2 options there, Dewalt and Metabo. I chose Metabo on the flip of a coin and have been happy with it so far. I’ve shot probably 10,000 nails with it and I’ve had exactly 2 jams, which were easily cleared, so I can’t complain. We’ll see how it holds up as I have probably another 30,000 nails to go.

God help me, I responded to a friend who plastered up some poo poo about a vote for Bernie being a vote for Communism, "takin' are guns", and killing babies. I don't argue well, so I'm probably just going to have to let him and his wing nut buddies "win". At least he knows where I stand, now, I guess. I've kind of just ignored his terrible political views because he was a good friend in high school, and does some cool stuff with cars and motorbikes. Yeah. At this point, I'm pretty much planning to keep driving it until something I don't feel like fixing pops or I have enough money to buy the replacement, then pull the 5.4 swap parts off and donate it. It makes me a little sad, because to me it's a great car with sentimental value edit: and a CARB legal 5.4 swap, but to anyone else it's a banged up old mustang.

Not getting a flu shot is putting your healthy-self at a likelihood of mild inconvenience, but others that are immunocompromised or young/old around you at significantly higher risk.

Fun fact, as of this week the CDC’s reporting this year’s flu shot is significantly effective at preventing the H1N1 variant. Even still the CDC is reporting that this year the flu has a 6.8% mortality rate which incidentally is about 3x higher than COVID-19.

This is a great example of where public shaming is important: get the flu shot and don’t be assholes. The shot literally cannot give you the flu. It’s very rare to have reactions to the shot although not impossible especially for people with egg? allergies (fact-check me plz actual medical people.)

I had a guy interested in buying some wheels off me. Catch is I'm in Chicago and he's in Rochester, and it would have cost $160+ to ship them out. I've actually got a buddy in Rochester I've been meaning to catch up with the last couple years, this would be a good excuse to head out there. I budgeted that out and saw gas+tolls would cost me like $200, and 24 hours drive time sounded miserable to cram into one weekend.

Looking elsewhere ... saw that Amtrak allows up to 4 checked "bags" that fit within size limits and less than 50lbs/ea. First two are free, second two are $20/ea. They specifically disallow "automotive parts" and "wheels and tires", but I'd think more because they don't want to handle random body panels, oily used CV shafts, or dirty mud-terrains loose in their baggage cars. I talked to the baggage attendant in Chicago and she advised boxing them up... "don't give us a reason to check them and likely we won't."

So, I boarded the train after checking these in:

and carrying the 3rd along with me (fourth was been sold off as of last year, 3rd is actually bent up beyond repair, and why I'm selling individually)

Ticket between Chicago and Rochester was $120 round trip, about $40 less than shipping one-way. Only catch is you've got to travel with your "shipment", or maybe air-mail your baggage claim ticket to the person picking them up. If you're an insane person (like me) and/or you have a good reason to go that way anyway, it's a pretty good deal!

tl,dr; found a nice hack to both ship wheels cheaply & have the buyer fund a little weekend vacation

The doctor I dealt with this morning said if I've been exposed to the flu repeatedly (and I have, 4 coworkers that I have contact with have had it so far) AND had the shot, I still have a chance of getting it... the symptoms are just reduced significantly. I've had the full blown flu once and really felt like death, this go-round I've only had chills, body aches, overall weakness, and not much of a cough. It's been several days, at this point I'm just dealing with aches and feeling run down. Mostly did the doctor bit so I could get a note for work (they want one after missing more than 2 days in a row).

If you want to ship big heavy poo poo for as cheap as possible, while incurring massive personal hassle, there's Greyhound Freight, they have a size limit, but if you don't mind your poo poo taking 4 weeks to get somewhere because it's space-a prices can't be beat.

I shipped a 1989 Plumouth Colt rear hatch, in Teal, from NY to CA, by building an exoskeleton of 1x2s and sheathing them with cardboard.

Driving an hour to the Albany Greyhound station and lugging that poo poo through the nastiest part of town was the worst part.

They do not inspire confidence that your package will be cared for, tracked in any way, or not, in fact, yeeted into the nearest dumpster as soon as you've paid.
