Even without corona every year there's a "March meeting plague" where half the conference gets sick because it turns out mixing 11,000 people from all over the world in a dry conference center is a great way to spread illness. Senior people (boomers) are against getting rid of the conference because they NEED to fly across the Atlantic to present their stuff or something. Older academics/business people have to fly and conference to rape different people than the ones they're normally used to raping.

March Meeting is the only 11,000 person event I've been to where I never had to wait in line for a women's washroom. If you're a straight man trying to find a woman to hook up with at a condensed matter physics conference it's not really a target rich environment.
