"The Black Swan" was a pop best seller along the same lines as the Freakanomics and Malcolm Gladwell books, people who read those kinds of books use it to describe any kind of incredibly low-probability, impossible to predict event (that nevertheless does happen from time to time). A decade ago they'd have been calling it "a perfect storm" of coincidences. And it's not even a good descriptor for COVID-19 - people have been predicting a nasty pandemic (in the context of modern interconnected global travel and movement environment) just like this for years (Avian Flu and SARS were near-misses).

It is literally a cold virus but it can kill people. If you're an average aged goon you're probably not at much risk but the economic effects are going to be real. Not to mention a miniscule death rate for non-olds still means a bunch of people die when huge numbers are exposed.

The symptoms can easily be mistaken for the flu. The only reason it's a big deal is that it's a killer if you have a weak immune system, which especially affects the elderly (the outbreak in Washington was in a nursing home and only 2 deaths occurred among younger people who did not seek treatment). The Swine Flu outbreak in 2009 infected way more people, myself included, so despite having a much lower mortality rate you ended up with hundreds of deaths in the US alone and over 150,000 worldwide.

It's as much a common cold as influenza is, that is to say it isn't. Some coronas cause common cold, but there is a reason that the disease caused by sars2 is called covid and that's because it isn't common cold. The reason it's a big deal isn't necessarily its fatality rate, it's more the efficient human-human spreading via aerosols which means that it is hard to contain and can infect vast swathes of the population if ignored.

It's a multitude of things. 1) I can be very stealthy, seeming to be a common cold/flu in those with a normal immune system (or even completely asymptomatic; I think someone said that something like 80% of cases were completely asymptomatic) while being deadly to vulnerable populations 2) It spreads easily; the stats I saw say that for every person with Corona it can be expected that 3 to 4 people will be infected. 3) America's culture of "work through the pain" could mean that low-risk people may continue to expose others much longer than normal.
