This here is the punished A500. It sacrificed one of its CIA chips for my C128.

The previous owner did some horrible hackery to this thing, and looks like kept it at the bottom of the most bottomest cellar. Or highest attic.

One of the CIA chips had a leg clipped off it. Then soldered back on because the wrong leg was cut off. The RAM expansion card had one of those terrible barrel batteries for the RTC on it, and yes it had leaked. But seems to have not damaged the card much, but I'm not really going to use that card anymore.

The mount for the Gary chip is a complete mess (which is needed for the RAM expansion to work) so that's going with its RAM card. Hopefully the Gary chip itself isn't damaged, but we'll see.

I've got some replacement CIA chips coming in the mail soon to replace the missing/hacked CIA chips. Then pray to Jay Miner/RJ Micall that it works in stock OCS config.

THEN MODIFY THE LIVING BEJESUS OUT OF IT.

I later put all my Qcracked versions on a Zip Disk, which later migrated to my first CD-R, which made it to my first DVD-R, now I have them on a BDR somewhere and an external drive. I've gotten 24 years of mileage out of that one drat demo CD. Which is still on my shelf:

The bit from 0:57 to 1:30 or so still gets me. I was completely obsessed at the end of 1992 and spent much of spring/summer of 1993 manually leveling everyone to lvl 99. I had a couple of cassettes with the music dubbed onto it. I about poo poo myself when a bit of the prologue music was used during the end credits of FFVI, which had a similar obsession.

Then FFVII came out, I bought a PS1 just for it aaaand never even finished disc 1.

So there's two tech relics. The SNES, and the cassette tapes I dubbed the game music onto because that system's sound chip could fuckin slap in the right hands

Still got a bunch of PC PowerPlay CDs and later DVDs from the early days of the magazine. I'd love to find a scanned archive of the magazines themselves, mainly to find the issue where I won literally every competition. Don't know how it happened but they used a bunch of fake names in the issue detailing who won.

Funny, I have a cardboard box of old computer magazines in an attic somewhere but I wish I'd kept the CDs instead. I spent a while recently trying to find a game I barely remembered that I knew had come from one.

I'm not sure I ever played any Moraff's games, but that just seemed like one of those crappy-looking shareware games I saw in all the catalogs, so I searched for "Moraff's Revenge" because that was a title I remembered and well it was Moraff's World.

I think my brain is now wired this way:
- Old high-resolution, low color depth game with crappy sprites: must be Moraff's World
- Old low-resolution, high(er) color depth game with crappy sprites: must be Ken's Labyrinth

Thanks for that trip down a very ugly memory lane.

Oh, Australia - I'm less surprised then. Norway is on the expensive end, but it's still cheaper than what you get.

I'm still sad about Steam moving to localized prices, though; going from US dollar pricing to NOK nearly doubled everything overnight. It's calmed down considerably, fortunately.

Cartridge game prices in the mid 90s were bonkers here. $140-150 AUD RRP for some. Virtua Racer was $180 on the Megadrive. That's over $300 today with inflation.

On the other hand I fondly remember the year or so of parity the AUD had with US right about the time that steam sales were at their peak.

Virtua Racer had that special chip inside it, I believe, that was supposed to compete with the one Nintendo was using. Like most things by Sega, they hosed it up.

Expensive SNES games were usually due to added expansion chips or co-processors in the cartridge. Games like Yoshi's Island were insane.

Yeah Yoshi had the same co-processor as Doom (Super FX 2) so it was probably a similar price.

And yeah SNES Doom isn't the greatest but it was at least playable and one of the better console ports of the game at the time, believe it or not.

Virtua Racing was more technically impressive than any SuperFX game, also better than most of them as a game too. Pretty expensive at the time, though.

It was glorious, felt like voltron putting it all together, but then PS1 came along and made it look as terrible and clunky as it really was.

Virtua Racer and Virtua Fighter ran like garbage, but I played the hell outta them. I'm really sad they never made better use of the full system, and instead we got this crap:

one of the only 32xCD games to come out...oh well I still put a ton of hours into this terrible thing.
