it was essentially a legal requirement in the US for a brief shining moment in time - the feds required passive restraint systems (eg airbag) but for older platforms OEMs were allowed to install automatic seatbelts instead because retrofit was too expensive / time consuming. once airbags become more common they go away.

Oh sure. I just find it funny. I had a '90 Escort and you had to do the lap belt on top of it.

I think they were all that way? The shoulder belt was automatic but the lap belt wasn't. I drove one of these cars until 2015, and I had to tell more than half of my passengers to do their lap belt.

I'd believe a study that said automatic belts were actually more dangerous than manual belts. On one side you have a minority who won't buckle themselves in anyway, and on the other side a larger group of people who think they're buckled in properly, but aren't.

Halfway through, I went to fix us both a coke float.
By the time I got back, he'd gone insane.
Plus, he'd left the gate open and there was evil everywhere.

New Hampshire does not require seatbelts for anyone over 18 or helmets for riding a motorcycle. Live free or die nerds.

My 92 Tercel was even worse, the shoulder belt wasn't automatic, it was just always attached to the door. The idea being you kind of open the door and slide into the seatbelt while sitting down. It was janky as heck and you still had to do the lap belt. Half the time I used the "emergency release" button on the door when getting out so I didn't have a seatbelt flopping around in my way and just had to buckle 2 belts when getting in. It was pretty dumb.

Christ, this sounds like something they would come up for the 24 Hours of Lemans to facilitate driver change time.

I think the only car I ever had to deal with that poo poo in was an Escort. Made me hate Escorts in general for a long time. I didn't realize it was a SRS bandaid, that's interesting.

Well don't you know I'm caught in a trap?

The problem with auto belts is a lot of people just didn't buckle the lap belt, which lead to underruning the chest belt and neck injuries.

E: and they weren't hard to defeat and not wear anyway.

I had an Escort as my first car and I still have a scar from where my finger got pinched in the auto seat belt

Ha! My first car was a 94 Escort LX and my mother "borrowed" it one day and the belt mechanism his her so hard in the head that it ripped out some of her hair.

GM did it that was as well.
My '90 RX-7 had motorized shoulder belts until I pulled them out and replaced them with normal seatbelts from an earlier FC.
Unfortunately, that also meant changing all the side trims, A-pillar, over the door, and C-pillar. Also, drilling out a bunch of spot welds and removing mounting tabs for the existing trim panels and seatbelt track mounts. I did it anyway, because I hated those seatbelts.

edit: though as I recall, Mazda warranties those automatic belts for life. Not sure of others.

Probably not, I think it was only a DOT/US requirement. I know old DSM dudes would look for Canadian seat belts and trims to swap them over. :haw:

Yes, alluto seat belts were not a requirement in Canada. I imported a set of manual belts for my '92 s13, the whole swap took like 30 minutes, and there was no need to replace interior panels if you were okay leaving the tracks installed.

I have owned 6 of these cars. The car has an HEI distributor ($300 part which replaces the unreliable spark control computer). Nutter bypass. New windshield. New wheel bearings. Not working: air conditioning (but I have a replacement compressor), radio, the driver side rear door latch, and the vacuum operated transfer case switch, but I have a Novak cable operated shifter (worth $150) that I will help you install. I also have an NP231D (no slip yoke) transfer case that is highly desirable for its bulletproof reliability and low range 4WD option (will probably require a shorter drive shaft; about $100)

Odd choice of wheels for an AMC Hornet, I agree with you there.

Even odder choice of interior and engine! Apparently there's an entire early BMW M Roadster sitting under that bodywork. More here, yours for only $14,500.
