i've heard it said before (and i agree to some extent) that artificial intelligence already exists, but it's not computers. it's corporations. after all, they sort of have a will of their own, don't they? primarily that "will" is just greed, with everything else existing in support of that greed. the employees are dumb tools that the larger entity, the corporation, uses to further its goals.

having a drive as simple and discrete as greed is actually what makes the whole thing work. the machine knows what it wants. it wants money. it wants number go up.without that, the machine would have no way to measure its progress ("fitness" in AI terms). it would act and grow randomly, or refuse to act at all.

go ahead and agree with all that, because that's not the real post. my friend, that's just the appetizer.

i think that concept - an organization itself being an autonomous intelligence - also applies to political parties. or at least to our two american political parties.

the goal would obviously be power instead of money. not quite as easy to quantify (how many senators is a president worth? or a supreme court justice?) but still roughly measurable by seats of power (mostly elected). if you can assign relative values to all those seats, you can build an AI capable of making decisions to further its fitness.

obviously trading seats for other seats isn't really how political parties compete - they compete for votes. so how do you win votes? well, if you feed this machine lots and LOTS of data about public opinion... it can tell you how to win votes. because it can tell you what people want to hear. and what people do NOT want to hear. it can find the wedge issues you should introduce. it can find the most advantageous anwers to your opponents' attacks, that actually pivot the issue toward your strength or your enemy's weakness.

of course, any machine would also need to know how to protect itself. it needs a survival instinct. it needs to be able to recognize potential threats - and act to get ahead of them before they grow into a real problem. mostly, it would handle this the way it does everything else - exploiting public opinion, introducing wedges, dividing up and swallowing its enemies' support.

:staredog::pipe: if i were the robo-democratic-party-machine, i would have run elizabeth warren's campaign exactly the way it went :staredog::pipe:

Well, they don't switch over the civil servant IT crews during a change of administration. Thus, they probably blamed this on THE CONTRACTORS. As they do in gov IT.

yes, I don't know if the original they're ripping off was a comedy but if there's one thing America loves it's an inferior comedic adaptation of a foreign success

The Office might be the most be the most egregious case, but then again there's House of Cards too
