Yeah. It’s honestly just been a really weird past few days with the wife since our housing hunt brought all this to light. I actually appreciate that preparation home kit website you all posted, and we will definitely get on that. It’s just.. I deal in healthcare and kind of always are thinking in risk/benefit and odds/chances kinds of ways towards informed medical decision making and this is just such a weird bet to try to work through mentally. Do you take the bet that this catastrophic thing has a 70% chance of not happening in your lifetime? Or do you just have to resign yourself to the idea that a 30% chance of being wrong and that at some point, anytime, in your life it could all just immediately go full apocalypse is just too much to risk? At the same time, the thought of moving out to loving Bend of all places and basically retiring at the age of 38, my wife and I both leaving our jobs for other ones, and my kids (nearly teenagers) having to start all over.. all over this significant but remote chance of catastrophe seems... excessive. Really excessive. Because of some extended family things simply leaving Oregon all together just isn’t an option. I mean we are not weird paranoid people, my wife and I, we are just trying to think this through. And it’s a hard one.

We also totally get the counterpoint that we could die of a car wreck or getting hit by an Uber driver or a whole myriad of things much more probably, but I think we all have to appreciate just the sheer number of ways a magnitude 9 earthquake could destroy or otherwise immutably alter your life that make it just it’s entirely own category of what if.

I don’t have much luck with google on this. Coming back to the idea of an informed decision, I just wish there were scientific resources or something with more concrete data and projections. But thank you all for your thoughts help.

I'm trying to brainstorm ideas for the goon PNW post-apocalypse gang. I'm thinking we could start by wearing flannel shirts, jeans, and gas masks and just add more accessories from there. Obviously we'll need firearms to stay competitive but I think we should use axes as much as possible. Eventually it's going to get to the point that people join the forums just so they can get into our axe gang, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

Speaking from personal experience, undoubtedly. As with cannabis, being scheduled precludes pretty much any researched claim to benefits, making the question sort of a catch 22. If you want objective research to prove or disprove efficacy, that research has to be allowed in the first place.

Yes. The only barriers have been the Drug War cops stealing money from budgets, and Joe Biden and his various check writers.

Johns Hopkins Opens New Center for Psychedelic Research

The research center, with $17 million from donors, aims to give “psychedelic medicine” a long-sought foothold in the scientific establishment.

Summary: This study showed that psilocybin produced substantial and sustained decreases in depression and anxiety in patients with life-threatening cancer, and that mystical-type experiences on session days mediated the effect of psilocybin dose on therapeutic outcomes. Participants, staff, and community observers rated participant moods, attitudes, and behaviors throughout the study. High-dose psilocybin produced large decreases in clinician- and self-rated measures of depressed mood and anxiety, along with increases in quality of life, life meaning, and optimism, and decreases in death anxiety. At 6-month follow-up, these changes were sustained, with about 80% of participants continuing to show clinically significant decreases in depressed mood and anxiety. Study participants attributed improvements in attitudes about life/self, mood, relationships, and spirituality to the high-dose experience, with >80% endorsing moderately or greater increased well-being/life satisfaction, which was further supported by community observer ratings showing corresponding changes.

Magic Mushrooms As Medicine? Johns Hopkins Scientists Launch Center For Psychedelic Research. Say Psychedelics Could Treat Alzheimer’s, Depression And Addiction.

Roland R. Griffiths, Ph.D., a psychopharmacologist and professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Department of Neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, said in an interview that the approach could offer “an entirely new paradigm for treating psychiatric disorders.”

He should know. Griffiths initiated the psilocybin research program at Johns Hopkins almost 20 years ago and led studies investigating the effects of its use by healthy volunteers. His research group at Johns Hopkins was the first to obtain regulatory approval in the U.S. to re-initiate research with psychedelics in psychedelic-naïve healthy volunteers in 2000. Griffiths said his group’s 2006 publication in the journal Psychopharmacology on psilocybin is widely considered the landmark study that sparked a renewal of psychedelic research world-wide.

Since then, Griffiths and his team have published several groundbreaking studies in more than 60 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals. In fact, scientists at Johns Hopkins have administered psilocybin to over 350 healthy volunteers or patients over the past 19 years in some 700 sessions.

quote:

There are no federal funds being allocated to the new center. “There has been almost no funding for [psychedelic therapeutic research in people] because we are stuck in the mindset of the 1960s,” Griffiths said. “Psychedelics were demonized. Their use was associated with the anti-war and anti-establishment movements ...

Maybe Nazis can multitask.

Seriously, this place is so close to perfect in so many regards. Except poo poo like that voters can't approve a really modest bond measure to future proof school infrastructure for 2 generations, but they have no problem building a new police station. It's really hard to say that it's entirely coincidence that this Greyhound posturing isn't backed up by proximity of the new HQ to the stop. That it centers around a bus stop hosted by an Indian owned convenience store in an sea of whiteness is also kind of funny.
