Just arrived at Incheon airport (~3pm local time) and it's a ghost town. Our flight was the only one that had currently arrived, and it was half empty (almost everyone had a row to themselves). No immigration queue, single luggage carousel in operation. They had a quarantine beagle doing the rounds, but he seemed more interested in the luggage trolleys than anyone waiting. Arrivals area had a handful of people but was otherwise empty. It's so weird. The only time I've been in an airport as quiet was arriving at Schipol at 4:30am.

As I hear more about virus stuff and government responses worldwide, I'm actually becoming slightly comfortable with the idea of being in China at this time. Because while of course the public numbers here are fake, the basic setup for quarantine and public health response isn't hugely awful in many areas. I was assuming that other countries would have learned anything, anything at all from what happened here. Clearly not.

Smoking when you're outdoors is really looked down on and possibly illegal(?), you have to find certain areas with ashtrays and stand there and smoke. Sometimes there are little cubicles, like a public bathroom but for smoking. However in tons of restaurants, arcades, etc you can just smoke wherever and there are no split off smoking/non smoking sections and nobody seems to mind if you light up right next to them when they're eating or whatever. This was around 2016 so idk if it's different now but was still really weird coming form the US where you can smoke outdoors all you want but inside it's almost universally forbidden. whats the attitude about littering in Japan? this feels like they are concerned about cigarette butts littering the streets

Areas of Canada, the US, and a lot of other western countries don't do poo poo differently (except clean out Costco toilet paper supplies) until there are enough confirmed cases in their Province/State, City, Municipality/County, etc. that it's already taken hold in a serious way. Here in Calgary people are still wiping their noses and mouths with their hands (gross), touching stuff like railings, door knobs, and handholds on public transit, then touching their noses and mouths again. It won't be until there are over 20 confirmed cases that maybe 1 in 10 people consider changing their filthy habits. . . maybe.

I never quite understood the "Japan has no trash cans" meme. Sure there aren't many municipal trash cans but they're in front of or just inside every convenience store and those are everywhere. They're also near many vending machines.

I didn't have trouble with the trashcan thing though. It's just a notable difference coming from the US. There aren't trashcans in places you've been conditioned to expect them so it stands out as different. There are tons of other notable differences. I wish public transportation in the US was like it is there. Khorne fucked around with this message at 17:08 on Mar 12, 2020 |

So at least you don't see them? I've caught many a Japanese littering, especially from their cars. Plastic bags make up 90% of the wildlife. I remember walking along a trash-filled beach with my friend who declared that all this trash came in across the sea from China and Korea, but every piece he picked up to demonstrate was clearly from Japan. The streets are still cleaner than Korea though, where every lamp post is a "trash can" unless it's specifically marked as not a dumping site. That baffled me for a while when I first moved to Korea. I was asking people when was bin night and where I should put out my rubbish. And I eventually figured it out, so long as it's in a garbage bag, in one of the little piles of garbage bags near lamp posts, the bin men will come and get it eventually. In Japan, it was much different, where we had several different bin nights for several different kinds of rubbish.

Zhengzhou has had 'no new cases' (yeah sure) for a while now. Until this guy shows up And Wednesday everyone gets this message saying he lied about coming back from another country, confirmed to have the virus. The longer article gives out his job, his home address, basically the cops doxxed him as they do. Now he's getting memed hard and everyone wants him dead. I'm guessing he'll end up killing himself. He's the current 'most hated guy in Zhengzhou'. But I'm also thinking, the reaction to this is so big that anyone else who might have it and maybe didn't properly report something is gonna be even less likely to ever come forward or go to the hospital. I guess if they just die at home that won't raise the 'confirmed cases' or death total for the city. BrainDance fucked around with this message at 03:54 on Mar 13, 2020 |

It's just a question of if it's deliberate (Japan, China) or due to being inept at a public response (USA). Italy has admitted they aren't even testing or counting anything but severe cases now.
