Coronavirus: Armed robbers steal hundreds of toilet rolls in Hong Kong

17 February 2020

Armed robbers in Hong Kong made off with hundreds of toilet rolls worth more than HKD1,000 ($130; £98).

Toilet rolls are currently in short supply in Hong Kong due to shortages caused by panic-buying during the coronavirus outbreak.

Knife wielding men robbed a delivery man outside a supermarket in the Mong Kok district, police said.

Word got around that a place with the virus had TP shortages and robberies because of it and welp.

If you're fortunate enough to live near a Wegmans, they are closing early every night at ten to clean and restock. They are also capping certain items so people can't horde them. Which I appreciated because it allowed us to actually buy paper towels and some canned goods.

https://www.wegmans.com/covid-19-response/

My wife and I went last night, got most of what we needed, and then went back this morning at another location to get the remainder of what we couldn't get the night before. Only thing that we couldn't get are tortillas (which makes me sad cause my wife makes loving fantastic burritos). Also people were being surprisingly decent.

We went into a Costco right when they opened while our car was getting serviced and that poo poo was beyond stupid. Only good thing we saw is that they finally had staff physically limiting the number people on TP and paper towels which was nice.

And that shows you their moral framework - having money means that you're a good person who makes good choices. If you don't have money, you're bad and therefore deserve to die.

In a surprise turn, the WaPo has this article about how Trump’s press conference on Friday was the result of effective management of the situation by Jared Kushner.

Lol no jk Kushner and Trump have been loving this up horribly.

quote:

Kushner rushed to help write Trump’s widely panned Oval Office address to the nation. His supermodel sister-in-law’s father, Kurt Kloss, an emergency room doctor, crowdsourced suggestions from his Facebook network to pass along to Kushner. And Kushner pressed tech executives to help build a testing website and retail executives to help create mobile testing sites — but the projects were only half-baked when Trump revealed them Friday in the White House Rose Garden.

And this is probably the most sympathetic part of the entire article, it only goes downhill from here.

It's kinda an islam thing that you bury the dead quickly. Within 24 hours would be generally the standard. Unless you're a divisive general, then they cart you up and down city streets for a week.

Our way of keeping a body on ice and viewing it a week later with a bunch of chemical preservatives keeping the smell back might be a little backwards in comparison.

Basically, we as a country rediscovered a cache of Four Loko and pounded that poo poo over the course of three years. You know, the old school Four Loko that tasted like rear end, but it had caffeine in it so we could drink all night and drive home back home, fully alert.

For about three years, we dodged the cops and trees through pure luck. Sure, we crashed into that signpost in Puerto Rico, but nobody really noticed that poo poo because the sign was vaguely brown and nobody really knew if it was there or not.

We've finally hit that tree, but we're still drunk/amped enough to not know it.

The Safeway near me is still stocked fine. They're hidden away on a neighborhood corner surrounded by strip mall garbage, so it's easy to ignore just driving by. They still had all the usual panic food when I went by yesterday.

The Walmart neighborhood market out on Academy though, that place looked like a disaster area, but still had plenty of crap this afternoon. Every pallet coming from the back was going to the pharmacy area though, and those shelves were pretty bare.

There's a definite correlation between dumbass white people and raids on toilet paper and other daily goods.

I don't understand it other than as an aspect of white privilege, because they've never had anything that might possibly impact them before.
