I live ten minutes from two huge casinos, everyone at dinner sunday was very proud of there being no cases in this part of the state. Those things are virus time bombs, when there is a case they will absolutely track it back to one or the other.

The good news is that both "voluntarily" shut down for the next two weeks.

I believe I work at one of them. Frankly I'd rather have the peace of mind of having income than worry about the C Virus. Which working there I am sure I already have anyhow. (Not that I want to infect others mind you.) I already did stuff like wash my hands and use sanitizer because I have seen some things. People gross af. I checked up on my in her 60s half sister and she asked me if they were paying us while we are off. (Edit: Via email.) Bless her heart. We are all hosed. Either financially, medically, or both.

I think maybe the world is overreacting in general right now at like a 12 out of 10 when we should be around an 8. But if so many people and our governments weren't such dismissive dumbfucks we could probably be at like a 6 or 7. In the Netherlands, after days of panic buying, I guess people realized that the supply chains aren't yet compromised, so the supermarket was pretty stocked. Bread and flour were mostly gone though.

Weed is also back on the legal market, since closing legal dispenseries made dealers come out of the woodwork. You'll just have to pick up your weed and not stay there

So basically you have to be symptomatic, and have obvious health complications to be considered. They have set up some of the so-called drive-thru testing centers in my state, but not in our rural area. Those are also only testing per Dr order though - you can't just show up.

West Virginia likely does actually, it has one of the poorest populations in the country, its mostly rural, and is primarily old people. It's just that the state is so poor that reporting and testing are non-existent.

OTOH maybe everyone is too poor for frivolous travel. And "Winter in West Virginia" isn't exactly a popular tourist destination. So it kinda makes sense that it would be one of the last US states to have cases. It'll get there, but it's not absurd that it's taking several weeks longer than places like Seattle or NY.

So good news at least. A local company that does dna poo poo and high tech stuff was just licensed today to make test kits. They say they can make 1 million a week. They’re a legit company I know too. But supply chain and labs....

Of course, he still drinks, smokes pot, and eats processed cheese, so it is a double edged sword.

WV has ski resorts. Also a lot of people in the eastern panhandle who commute into NOVA/DC. I'm surprised nobody in Martinsburg or Berkeley Springs has tested positive.

Southeastern WV 'round about Monroe County would be the place I'd go to escape an apocalypse though.

They've been throwing stuff at the wall in terms of trying to find effective antiviral treatments. Doctors are allowed to use stuff in off-label ways, but that's not good science and if it isn't backed up by research the observed effects could be literal wishful thinking. A lot of effort goes into creating research which is bias free specifically because we humans are biased and fallible.

So the practical effect is that doctors will try anything they think might work based on what they know about viral replication and what they've heard from other doctors and research on related coronaviruses, and if they notice anything seeming to work they share their notes in articles which are not peer reviewed but which are published in an emergency measure. Then other doctors can try it, and everyone's got a chance to compare notes; but until the research is done properly in double-blind studies with peer review then it is at best a recommendation and not an indication.

That's all using existing, already proven safe, drugs.
Making a new drug takes just as long, if not longer, than making a new vaccine.
