it would've been pretty reasonable in 2016-2019 for an asian-american voter to assume trump doesn't actually gaf one way or the other about china aside from using trade deals as leverage for his personal trump trademarks or whatever

otoh it would've been very stupid to assume he wouldn't push yellow peril racism as a convenient deflection from his incompetence and indifference to his constituents' lives

In the 80's and early 90's there was a ton of yellow panic over Japan, see for example Rising Sun, and that's when a lot of Trumps opinions about reality were formed.

You may be thinking that Chinese and Japanese are not the same things, but now you're remembering Trump is a huge racist, so in fact, they are, to him.

100% it's trump poo poo: he was talking all about how "great and powerful" china and whatshisface were for a few days until a SUDDEN about face into the "JINA virus" territory
i guarantee you trump tried to get something from china and they turned him down. no doubt.

I've heard about China calling in their debt from Right wing echo chambers for years. What does that even mean? China will send in shock troops as a form of debt collections?

They have a baby-level understanding of national debt.

They also think that the US government is essentially a household budget on the money side.

Even though the US Fed can literally do a video game style "money" cheat increase the value of their accounts with a single mouse click.

Except dumber, because they're worried about the equivalent of a bank suddenly demanding you repay all of your mortgage at once. And that the mortgage is basically the same as your yearly income.

if you want to be charitable, it means they stop buying treasury bills, etc when their current holdings mature

this would make it somewhat more expensive for us to borrow money. that’s all.

They think "the US owes money to China" is like you owing your friend $200 and he could at any time turn up at your house and demand you pay him, not like having a fixed-term fixed-rate mortgage with a bank where as long as you make your payments on time they have no recourse, and also if you want to you can wave a magic wand and say brrrrrrrr and suddenly have the money to make your mortgage payment.

Well it's kind of worse because your friend has the largest military in the world, and also the second-largest military in the world, and I think the third- largest military in the world also?

So if you show up at his house it won't go well for you.

If the US defaults on T-bills there is no recourse for anyone, basically.

years of sociopathic politicians competing to out-clown one another during the election cycle in order to appeal to dipshits has trained a lot of voters to ignore these kinds of warning signs and assume it'll be fine once they're in office
