DD: Fondly regard abomination.

So I've realised I should get round to voting in the Labour leadership election before it's too late. Keir Starmer strikes me as a competent centrist technocrat with a place in any shadow cabinet but who definitely shouldn't be leading the party. Assuming that's right, who's better out of Rebecca or Lisa?

RLB isn't super exciting, but her heart and brain are in the right place. Lisa Nandy is Blue Labour (I don't mean that metaphorically, I mean the actual 'what if socialism but more nationalist (and also less socialist)' Blue Labour organisation). Avoid, avoid, avoid.

the blue labour stuff is likely overblown coz the thread decided instantly to back RLB and all i've heard over the past few months is just that they support her or something

Lisa Nandy was noticeably backed by the Jewish Labour Movement and Jess Phillips endorsed her after dropping out to give you some idea of the direction of her support.

The articles she's been writing seem pretty vacuous and devoid of detail IMHO. There's a bit more meat behind Long-Bailey's candidacy I think, although the Continuity Corbyn label has really stuck and will no doubt damage her in the future with the wider public.

I had an awful fever a couple of weeks back, really kicked in on the 4th, which pissed me off as I had to cancel on a friend's birthday and later on a family funeral, which looked like overreacting at the time but probably doesn't now. (Also the family member was in her early 70s, and died of a sudden viral infection following a routine thing in hospital, but it wasn't recorded as corona related).

That followed by a long dry cough and loss of lung capacity that I'm only just getting over, so I've been avoiding gatherings and distancing as much as practical for almost 4 weeks now, and it'd be just my loving luck if I just get over it as they lock down the country and advise me to stay in for 12 weeks, but I can't know for certain because they're not doing any loving testing. :toot:

And this also pisses me off because I kinda wanted a decent rifle crossbow and they're all being stockpiled by people who will never use them, or worse.

You know I joked about having the coronavirus last month, but I'm beginning to wonder. It definitely wasn't a cold - very little snot, no sinus blockage which normally cripples me with even a mild cold, and I had a hell of a fever for a week and two weeks of a (low-level) dry cough, but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as the flu - no aches and pains, no lack of energy.

However I did have a very sore throat didn't have anosmia or any lung symptoms apart from the cough (which at the time I put down to postnasal drip), so it probably wasn't COVID. Definitely wasn't a normal cold though.

the most damning thing is how banal it is. corbyn talked about migrants undercutting peoples wages, the only sentence actually even addressing immigration in the pablum is

quote:

And we need to understand that in towns like mine, freedom of movement meant opportunities for people from other countries. They felt that others had the chance to come and work at the local hospital, while local people weren’t able to train as nurses, because the government had cut the nursing bursary.

which is a fairly accurate reflection of what some voters were saying in 2019. that people feel abandoned by the government but think labour will give opportunities to people who aren't them. hell i'm the same, i don't like tories cause they give opportunities to rich fuckers but not to everyone else. its just latched onto immigrants for some people.

the training thing is also pretty much true, when i was doing my professional qualifcation a couple years back, maybe 2 other students were british and everyone else was from the EU.
one of our clients is a very poncy london thinktank and none of them are british, they're all young, very smart foreigners.
highly educated people from countries with superior education systems are cleaning up in the UK while the populace is neglected because what does capital care if the workers are local or not?

corbyn's also correct and boring observation was more dogwhistley than that.

the only thing that seems like anything approaching a dog whistle is the london elites thing, but whats that even a dogwhistle for? honestly yeah lol gently caress the london elite

quote:

For decades now, Labour hasn’t been listening to what people are trying to tell us. About the decline of local economies and high streets. A loss of trust in politicians and in us, to deliver on our promises. We’ve offered policy solutions devised by a small group of people behind desks in central London, when the deafening cry from people out in the country was for more power and control over their lives and communities, and a new national story in which they felt they had a role to play.

What does seem clear from reading that article though is that she's rubbish either way lol
no solutions, no vision, just vaguely identifying a problem

- Nurses are being randomly selected to go on Covid wards, as there is a lot of staff sickness
- These nurses are being sent with masks and gowns being their full 'protection'
- Full PPE only if they are inserting things into the patient's throat or if the patient is having cardiac arrest

I'd like to believe this but does the experience of closed environments like the Diamond Princess not contradict that reading?

I've had a low level postnasal drip and occasional tight chest for weeks now which I attributed to pollution and allergies. Also had a very mild fever about a month ago. If the advice was wrong and I've accidently put my parents at risk by moving back with them despite isolating 14 days with no headache, fever, sore throat, dry cough, or difficulty breathing, I'll never forgive myself.

I don't understand how this could possibly be true given the current rate of positive tests is about 1 in 10. It would surely require a significant proportion of the people being tested to have already had the disease and completely recovered from it, within a ~4-8 week window prior to the test taking place.

If it is true then can they explain the stats?

We've had 424 dead out of a population of 66 million, so if we assume that 40% of people have already been infected then the deaths should level out at about 1,000.

Italys population is 60 million so if the death rate is 1000/66million, or 1/66k, then they should have about approx 909 deaths. They've had 6,820 so far, and although it seems to be slowing it doesn't seem to be tailing off....

someone posted that in the cspam thread earlier, and while it would be absolutely amazing news and I hope to be disappointed, I'm not sure I believe it.

the main problem as far as I can see is that this would need the vast, vast majority of cases to be (at least mostly) asymptomatic which doesn't really chime with the observations on the diamond princess, where 45% were asymptomatic at time of testing positive according to the CDC report. I can't quite work out if that means none of them then went on to develop symptoms, because it gives the number of people in intensive care as a a proportion of the people who were symptomatic when tested which could mean that they were the only ones who were ever symptomatic.

Even if they were all totally asymptomatic for the entire course of the disease, that still leaves you with 55% of cases exhibiting some sort of symptoms, 10% of whom require intensive care and 2.4% of whom died.

the passenger age skews high (median of 69) but even so, I don't see how this could possibly have silently infected 30,000,000+ people in the last couple of months without us noticing

Korea and China's experience also contradicts this unless there are a huge number of asymptomatic cases that haven't been caught by contacting tracing

also, assuming exponential growth, wouldn't most of the people who have been asymptomatically infected have been infected in the last couple weeks or so? if so, surely you'd expect more than ~10% of tests to be coming back positive as lots of people would just be wandering around with it regardless of if they fit whatever criteria you need to meet to get a test now

Yeah it doesn't quite seem to add up...

Also also, if it were true we wouldn't have 8,000-ish positives out of tens of thousands of tests done. Even if we were just testing purely randomly it wouldn't be such a ratio, but given that we're only testing those who are like, symptomatic (or rich lol), we should be seeing an even higher ratio of positive tests if the infected numbers were anything like that high.
