My favourite little monsters
So I've been playing a bunch of Monster Super League: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ftt.msleague_gl

It's a pretty good gacha pokemon-esque game (the mons are called 'Astromons'), where you go through each level that consists of 3-4 battles of between your group of 4 monsters and a number of opponents to complete it, possibly catching monsters along the way. What I like about it is the number of avenues of improvement you can take you get stronger, whether it's evolving your monsters ('awaken' them by fusing mons of the same time, then evolve them to the next level), ascending them (spend elemental stones to get them to the next star level in a 2-6 star hierarchy), equip them with stat gems that you can level up by throwing money at them at hoping for a successful improvement, or equip them with trinkets that can be improved by dumping materials and other trinkets into them.

You get three summons a day with ads, same with trinkets, and find free summons all over the place as rewards for battles or challenges that are pretty easy to accomplish, there's auto battling that will stop if you encounter a rare 'mon in the wild, and there's technically an energy system but the game throws so much free energy at you that I've been doing auto battling for hours each day and I have yet to go below my energy maximum (I am currently sitting at...jesus, 1821/105 energy). Regular battles take 3 energy each, and last a couple minutes, so...yeah. Lots.

Honestly my biggest gripe with the game is that all the best 'mons are humanoid. Other than that, I quite like it.

Well I may or may not have bad news for you. I couldn't find much information on its gameplay so I said gently caress it and took the plunge. It's somewhat of a pared down pvp-heavy Stellaris. You don't really run an empire so much as one starbase. You build up the starbase which allows you to build up fleets, which allows you to to beat the piss out of npc pirates and other players. There are system maps and the Galaxy map and you can jump your starbase from place to place. Players can form alliances and claim territory, which forms the blobs Stellaris players are familiar with on the Galaxy map.

Ethics have been pared down to basically give regular old bonuses to things like income and ship construction speed. There are events and science ships that can go scan stuff that comes up but it almost always boils down to a slight shift in your ethics alignment and maybe some resources or boosters.

As for fleets your ships are somewhat customizable in their armament but not nearly as much as the regular game of course. You basically choose what weapons go onto which hardpoints and what defenses the ship packs. Fleets have leaders and a flagship that level up. Likewise you can appoint leaders as your governor and fill certain cabinet positions, both of which yielding bonuses to different things.

All in all, I'm on the fence. I like some of the truly Stellaris stuff like the ship customization and ability for alliances to nail down turf in the Galaxy, but I am generally not a fan of these raider games at all. I'm gonna stick with it for a bit though and see how I feel later.

The tools of a hero mean nothing without a solid core.

I appreciated that the tutorial was a couple of basic intro mechanics missions, obligatory "here's the mission button and how to pick a friend for the team" mission, and then they put everything into a beginner's tutorial off to the side and let you have full access to the UI.

I really liked that aspect, too. It's also the first game that has an auto feature that I don't use. The combat is just like FF:T.

Now what's going to make me stay is how deep/interesting the job system is. So far it looks like every character has set jobs/job boards, which is at least better than 90% of the other gacha games.

Does the game have character weapons? IE: "Here's Y'shtola and you can gacha/grind to get Thyrus which unlocks this special skill?" If so, this game's going to get very Alchemist's Code, very fast. And that's very, very, very bad.

As far as I can tell the character specific gear is unlocked by leveling up the character.

Most characters had a character-specific weapon. Anyone else could use those weapons too (usually) but the character unlocked their ultimate ability when using their respective weapon.

If you could grind for the character, their weapon usually came from the gacha. They might also suck unless you grind to unlock their 3rd job and maybe master it (Zangetsu was like this, iirc) at which point they could be good in the right situation.
If the character came from the gacha, you could grind their weapon. The grindable weapon usually starts at 2-3* and has to go to 4* to unlock a character's ultimate ability when they use the weapon.

The best characters were usually gacha, and grinding their weapons was often tied to an event's hardest levels. These levels couldn't be auto-battled because the game intentionally has god-awful AI for autobattle. You can't skip ticket the fights either because  at skip tickets being that useful in AC.

To give an example:

In the FATE collab you could pull Gilgamesh from the gacha. He was top tier and really powerful Getting his weapon involved running an EX/EX2 fight and the enemies in those hard fights have such stat bloat that they could kill characters strong against their typing if you aren't careful (and if your unit's weak vs them that unit is toast). Each clear of the event stage could easily take 15 minutes, and if you're lucky you only needed to clear it a dozen or so times to get enough drops to get Gilgamesh's weapon to 4*. So you're manually grinding for a good 3-4 hours, at best, and likely 5-6+ hours assuming you can even put together a team strong enough to maybe beat the stage with any sort of consistency. I forget the exact team I ran it with, but it included my own Gilgamesh and a couple other characters with 2-3 classes mastered and was overall pretty strong for having only bought a couple of their fountain of lapis equivalents early on. A new player with undeveloped, low level characters has zero chance of beating those levels.

Basically, any sort of high level gameplay made it poo poo. And when I say the AI's bad, I'm talking "your level 60+ team consistently loses when you try to autobattle level 40 stages because your units make decisions that are just that stupid, including healers trying to attack full HP enemies while an ally next to them is at critical hp."

Yeah, and this one has a particularly lovely gacha system. It uses a VIP system, which are the bane of all F2P games. It also relies on dupes to limit break characters. So that's a hard pass from me.

Why even make a FF Gacha game if you're not going to have FF characters as the pulls? I don't care of what OC do-not-steal characters they have.

Beyond that, it just seems to have a nightmare amount of stuff to upgrade and craft all at once.

I've been playing WoTV a bit, and I can't speak to the AI much (seems adequate for low difficulty stuff), but I haven't seen anything like the unique weapon system you're describing. Units have a FFBE style TMR reward but the items don't seem to be character specific or particularly vital.

I don't know how long I'll stick with it but I'm amused enough to keep tapping through the story for now.

It seems like every character has an associated world quest that can be farmed daily for a trickle of duplicate shards? Everyone's awakening menu links directly to a quest for it, I think you just have to make story progress to open them all.

Tried this out and here is a trip report :

-Rerolling is easy, 5-10 mins, but I couldnt get anything in a day, maybe just unlucky (but.)
-There is paid only features, that's kind of a bummer if you're not ready to spend and dont know if you'll be playing it for the long haul.
-Rudimentary investigation revealed genuine attempts at setting new world records for required grind.
-Look nice on the whole, classic FFT feel, I can see myself playing this if it was a complete retail package at a reasonable price. So no.

Not sure if this is even referring to the same game but it's relevant.
This, holy poo poo they went overboard with menus and sub menus and shops and sub shops. It's actually like navigating a jungle. Some games feel
like a storefront with various isles and sections, this feels like a loving mall with 20 different concurrent banners and then ticket banners to match.

I might roll more a bit later because it looks cool if the mood is right, but it's uh, not very inviting.

edit: Not to sound too pessimistic, here is a positive: for once a gacha game that does not look like a porno poker deck collector. So that's kind of a major plus for a lot of people, or a major minus for others.

From what I gather it's supposed to be a good thing because you need so much resources to max someone one, someone spending money will still be required months of grinding and such. There is absolutely no way you can have everyone and have them all functional no matter how much you spend but this will not prevent from challenges and such from expecting you to have everyone in optimal state (standard Gumi.) Yet somehow this is also viable as F2P if youre very careful about how you manage your resources.

you can switch autobatler on and off. though you really only control the heroes spells... it is still mostly autobattler.

the Guild Adventure mode gives you a small map to gently caress around in against other guilds, but the core is still setting up formations and letting them take a run at eachother.

I've been playing the poo poo out of Random Dice lately.

It's a PVP or Co-op tower defence, using a range of different 'dice' towers that level up as you merge them. You have a team of 5 dice and the strategy around it is really satisfying.

It's very addicting and not ad-riddled.
