here's an interesting article saying the toilet paper shortage might not just be due to hoarding but because people having to poop at home means they actually need more tp now

quote:

There’s another, entirely logical explanation for why stores have run out of toilet paper — one that has gone oddly overlooked in the vast majority of media coverage. It has nothing to do with psychology and everything to do with supply chains. It helps to explain why stores are still having trouble keeping it in stock, weeks after they started limiting how many a customer could purchase.
In short, the toilet paper industry is split into two, largely separate markets: commercial and consumer. The pandemic has shifted the lion’s share of demand to the latter. People actually do need to buy significantly more toilet paper during the pandemic — not because they’re making more trips to the bathroom, but because they’re making more of them at home. With some 75% of the U.S. population under stay-at-home orders, Americans are no longer using the restrooms at their workplace, in schools, at restaurants, at hotels, or in airports.
Georgia-Pacific, a leading toilet paper manufacturer based in Atlanta, estimates that the average household will use 40% more toilet paper than usual if all of its members are staying home around the clock. That’s a huge leap in demand for a product whose supply chain is predicated on the assumption that demand is essentially constant. It’s one that won’t fully subside even when people stop hoarding or panic-buying.

The labor superintendent keeps showing up in the morning cuz apparently every job but this one and a maintenance contract with a pharma company have closed down. And he's always like "at least you guys get to come to work!"

yeah the chud Governors have figured out they can get the press off their back by issuing something titled "stay at home order" which really just is about preventing cities from actually doing what is needed. it is hosed up.

Capitalism works! The joint commission (accreditor for hospitals on america) put out a joint statement today to put the vile poo poo head hospitals that are banning/firing health care workers using personal home ppe on blast. At least as much on blast as a lame auditing company can put their corporate masters. Even threw some shade at the CDC for waffling and relaxing ppe standards.

makes sense. we're seeing a similar issue with flour and yeast here - sold out at every grocery store but bakeries are now selling them directly to costumers in bulk.

I've also seen at least one restaurant selling TP because their commercial supplier has no problem getting it for them. sure it is probably 1-ply but whatever.

There have been studies done on a bunch of animals, from primates to birds, where one subject is given a smaller reward than the other for performing an identical task. They end with the recipient of the larger reward eventually sharing part of their reward with the other. Socialism is the natural order.

Hell, even the birds on my garden feeder understand it. When I first set it up there were constant squabbles over access to this new food source. Now that they're used to it always being present, they tend to sit on a nearby wall and take turns.

I have a theory that the same thing is happening with food. It's not that everyone's rushing, it's that all the schools and restaurants are closed so everyone is buying more food

I follow farming twitter a bit and there has been a similar phenomenon happening there. Lots of crops and dairy getting trashed because it was destined for hospitality supply chains that evaporated. Our logistics are so hosed lol.

Food is similar. Some of my local restaurants are turning in to drive-by grocery stores of sorts, although they have (very) limited options available like only whole milk, or the quantities are large. We got 25 pounds of brussel sprouts from one that we've been going through along with passing those and other food to my parents so they don't have to go to the store. The packaging and whatnot is not setup to be transitioned easily in to supplying say a grocery store, and I don't think those supply companies are going to just stop and shift their contracts and upstream supply over to grocery store supply chains temporarily. Eventually when restaurant demand re-adjusts to some lower than pre-virus baseline I assume those long-term contracts will shift around.
