I haven’t had a drink in a month and I’m less anxious than I’ve been in years, alcohol causes anxiety and you end up in a feedback loop where you drink to stave off the anxiety yesterday’s drinking is causing.

so, healthdata projects a total of 93531 deaths in the US by August

ontario's model shows a upper estimate of 15000 over two years

both these models suppose social distancing and the first one also shows absolutely no projected deaths by july

do those estimates seem a little low to anyone else? why is there nothing for july?

Comment I made on Reddit. Just junk food for thought

quote:

> It’s like ok so you don’t trust the police or government but you also want them to be the only ones with the guns.....

They're liberals. American liberalism is all about peace, understanding, subtly changing the status quo to be more progressive, and nonviolent solutions.

Ask most actual leftists and they'd agree with rightists that guns are a necessity.

My take on it is that the right to bear arms cuts out the middleman we've seen in many revolutions in history, but the big drat problem is that Americans' understanding of what a revolution is has been skewed horribly by the inaccurately named American Revolution (which was far closer to a civil war in both lead up and execution) as well as popular fictional depictions of revolutions and rebellion narratives (where revolutions are collective actions against the crimes of tyrannical individuals, not collective systemic issues). Therefore, we think of these uprisings as protracted insurgencies. In reality, revolutions almost always follow the same trajectory:

- Desperation over food shortages, political corruption, and erosion of previous rights (i.e. good times in decline)

- Increasing labor strikes and refusal to work

- Crackdown by government forces

- General strike + national uprising in solidarity; the revolution begins

- Revolutionaries raid armories (the critical part, what the Second Amendment effectively allows Americans to skip)

- Military sent out to aid police

- Large swaths of the military defect

- Government abdicates

- Systemic change (often for the worse)

- If pro-government forces are loyal enough or if the incoming provisional government is too weak, *then* you get an insurgency and civil war or reign of terror.

The lead up might take months or years, but the actual "revolution" is all over and done with within one or two *weeks*. Just look at Ukraine in 2014; it followed these steps almost perfectly.

An interesting facet of revolution is that they seem impossible until they happen. Frenchmen in 1788, Russians in 1904/16, and Egyptians in 2010 would probably have told you their systems were eternal and too powerful to overcome. That might be the case in both China and the USA right now. The USA might even be much, much closer to it than anyone's comfortable admitting. In our case, we have a national myth that we're #1 in everything and have long had financial and food security while other nations tend to live in want and envy of us; if that gets disrupted, the myth shatters and people will succumb to desperation far sooner (a similar national myth getting eviscerated wrought the 1905 Russian Revolution).

My thing with the Second Amendment crowd is that they have taken completely to that myth of what fiction/American history says revolution is. They think that the "Revolution" will come as a result of big government types trying to take their guns and infringe on their civil liberties because that's how the American Revolution effectively started (and it fits with the whole "tyrannical King and his merry men of effete tax-loving bureaucrats" image that most cartoon revolutions have), and the whole thing will be an insurgency by Christian warrior-farmers who alternate between prayer and battle against hilariously incompetent Socialist government agents who probably dyed their hair blue and pretend to fly around hunting for them because they identify as attack helicopters. In the case of an actual revolution, they'd almost certainly be on the side of reactionaries trying to squash it, especially since revolutions almost always emerge as a result of collective labor unrest. Not that leftist revolution-fetishists are much better; they see the same sort of situation because of how the Cuban and Chinese revolutions played out.
