in general i have found that most people's idea of quarantine/social distancing just kind of blanks over & exempts the numerous times they regularly break quarantine.

like we only leave for groceries (havent in 2+ weeks), walks in a totally empty graveyard near our house... and that's about it. I think we're due for a grocery run early next week just to freshen up, and we could 100% last another week if we had to for sure.

but i talk to people and quarantine includes: going to their family's second house on cape cod (and back), running out to the liquor store, a few trips to CVS "for snacks," this morning there were 2 guys working without masks raking leaves on town property right behind my house.

I've noticed this too. I go to work half of the time now, and in general attempt to make a single supply run each week.

One of the families in my hallway seem to always be going somewhere or having people over, and there are always loving kids playing on the stairs.

The people at work aren't much better, it seems like a lot of them are out having get togethers, but they're at someone's home because everywhere else is closed.

I saw a bunch of PPE right after Ohio shut everything down, but last week I saw nothing but a few gloves and some guy that was slathering on disinfectant before entering a store.

wasnt trying to be condescending here sorry just i dunno like i keep hearing people still not quite fully take this seriously like my post above about people still popping out to the store. im no loving bootlicker but like... there are going to be a bunch of unpleasant things we need to do to get through this and it's only going to get worse. i feel like people are still too much about their personal needs and not the collective needs, but i admit there's a lot of daylight on this issue as to whether it's actually necessary or helpful.

not sure "the sun is a disinfectant" is relevant either, nobody is going to be outside in direct sunlight long enough to disinfect... what really? their clothes? their bodies?

Unless it's Dominic Cummings, who has probably given the codes to a Holocaust denier he found on Twitter.

the point is that in the sun you are unlikely to leave any long-lasting residue that could carry disease, making it basically impossible to spread the disease if you distance during your walk. this might not be true if you take a running trail at night.

Finishing up revolutions podcast and my takeaway is basically "lol at soft American leftists not taking a chance when it's handed to them"

The trick this day in age is convincing normies why socialism is the answer in 144 characters or less or image form, such that the impression can weather several hours of MSNBC or FOX, because today's unique combination of media saturation, police monitoring, and ease of finding routes for escapism make it hard to use classical tools such as speeches, books, manifestos and what have you. Either that or pull them out of normie media and into some sort of commie-chan or otherwise dark corner of the internet to radicalize them with a constant stream of guillotine memes. Even then, unless they or their families are on the street and dying, it's going to be hard to coax any action out of them: turns out comfortable people don't want to risk losing what they have, even if society as a whole gains.

what?

UVB radiation from sunlight takes several hours to disinfect from this virus. You're talking about a period of days, even if you have high UV levels.

Vice has a summary of Raab, the man in charge while Boris breathes through a machine.

https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/884jjg/dominic-raab-replace-boris-johnson-coronavirus

quote:

HE WANTS US TO PAY FOR HEALTHCARE
A 2011 book co-authored by Raab suggested people should be charged directly for NHS services and patients be called "customers". Raab later claimed he had "never advocated privatisation".

HE DOES NOT WANT SOME PEOPLE TO BE PAID FOR THEIR LABOUR
Hours before the government released a publication in response to a report criticising "exploitative unpaid internships" in 2018, Raab advertised an unpaid internship.

AND WOULD HAPPILY HAVE PEOPLE WORK THEIR FINGERS TO THE BONE
Another book co-authored by Raab, this time in 2012, argues against workers' rights, while a 2011 paper saw him advocating that start-ups should be freed of the burden of having to pay the minimum wage to under-21s, or give parental leave. He also called for the Working Time Regulations to be scrapped.

HE HAD A STRANGE RESPONSE TO THOUSANDS OF DISABLED PEOPLE DYING BECAUSE OF AUSTERITY
When a disabled woman told Raab on live TV in 2017 about tens of thousands of disabled people dying every year because of health and social care cuts, he responded that pleas for support were "just a childish wish list".

HE REALLY WANTED US TO LEAVE THE EU
As a hardline Brexiteer, Raab was a prominent campaigner for Vote Leave before the 2016 referendum. He became Brexit secretary in July of 2018.

BUT DIDN'T SEEM TO FULLY COMPREHEND THAT THE UK IS AN ISLAND?
The Eurosceptic Raab somehow thought it wise to admit in November of 2018, while he was still Brexit Secretary, that he hadn't quite understood how reliant we are on the vital Dover-Calais crossing when it comes to trade.

THE HE RESIGNED OVER THE WITHDRAWAL AGREEMENT HE HELPED TO NEGOTIATE
A week later, he quit as Brexit Secretary because of "fatal flaws" in the draft Brexit deal he had helped May to negotiate with the EU.

HE HAS NEVER READ THE GOOD FRIDAY AGREEMENT
When asked in February of 2019 if he had read the Good Friday Agreement – a document fairly important to Brexit negotiations – in its entirety, Raab conceded he had not. He said of the 35-page document, which helped signal the end of The Troubles in Ireland, "It's not like a novel, you sit down you say, 'Do you know what over the holidays... this is a cracking read’.”

HE THINKS IMMIGRATION IS WHY YOU CANNOT GET ON THE PROPERTY LADDER
As housing minister, in April of 2018, Raab said immigration had forced house prices up by 20 percent over the past 25 years. The UK Statistics Authority asked him to provide evidence for his claim, and it transpired that it was based on an out-of-date model.

In conclusion: standard-issue Tory, and therefore a complete oval office.

I stand corrected (though that article really meanders lol), my own country's CDC equivalent has claimed that long exposed surfaces are less likely to harbor the virus. Then again my country's government has claimed a lot of things recently, including that elections will be safe lol

Still, the impact of vit D and general sun exposure is something to consider.

Yeah, this is what I've been referring to. The point is not to disinfect yourself, but that the surfaces might be safer during the day than during the night. But I think you're right that this takes too long to be an appreciable factor.

At least the number of deaths attributed to heart attacks is down. I was really worried about catching a heart attack from someone contagious and having my body thrown into the back of a refrigerated truck, which our hospitals have at the end of every flu season.
