Idiots have been breaking into quarantined campgrounds up where I live to use as base camps for their escape from civilization during this pandemic, and I gotta hand it to them. They may be trying to escape COVID-19, but breaking into those permanently shuttered campgrounds is a hilariously bad idea because the wild rodents(along with their fleas & ticks) are infected with the bubonic plague.

Why are there bubonic plague camps in the first place ? It seems the issue is unrelated to the corvid pandemic.

IDK, they've repeatedly tried culling and spraying them over the years, and they come back later and the bubonic plague is still present in the rodent population, so they just permanently closed them after too many failed attempts to eliminate it. They're clearly marked as being closed due to a presence of bubonic plague, but these new visitors to the area broke in and have been fined, but it's a thing that happened recently.

...

This is insane.

This is all so crazy and there is no end.

I’ve been reading a lot lately, more than the huge amount I usually read. Been reading here, news, following tangents, gaping at worldometer’s spinning numbers. I’m very much a layman when it comes to this virology/epidemiology poo poo but so far:

1. I slapped the boomer secretary of my lodge with a series of texts to him, to the rest of the lodge leadership, saying that their Fox News rhetoric was going to get them all killed. I insisted that we rekindle our old partnership with the local food bank, because people were going to starve, our membership was going to rot in their homes. The rallying cry of Masons saving starving people during the California gold rush, shaping the city of San Francisco to this day went totally unheeded. I did that in mid March, before the lockdown, while the toilet paper jokes were just starting. I got a call last week from someone telling me my dues were late in response.

2. In late March, I got into an argument over dinner with a surgeon and his ombudsman wife, who “get daily briefings” about how this virus is only dangerous to the old and otherwise immunocompromised. About how they both know that this is an act of war, a purposeful attack by China. How they KNOW about the research facility in Wuhan, about how that is DEFINITELY the source. The bat caves in Wuhan, filled with over 400 viruses just like SARS-COVID-2, were made up by the notoriously fake commie news outlet NPR. How they thank god “we have a strong leader” in the White House right now!
They’ve avoid talking to me since.

Now here we are in mid April, and I just read something that’s bothering the hell out of me somewhere today. For fucks sake I wish all the crazy ended with a $1,200 check signed by DONALD J TRUMP. I would love it if someone, preferably someone who’s not a layman, could tell me that I’m wrong because this bothers me more than any of the insane poo poo I’ve heard up till now.

The reason there is no cure for the common cold, why we don’t have cold shots like we do for influenza, is that Coronavirus immunity doesn’t last for very long You can get the same Coronavirus year after year. There’ll never be a vaccine, we’ll just have to endure this virus, and more just like it FOREVER.

Most coronaviruses confer at least a few years of immunity, including SARS and MERS. In actuality, a ton of different kinds of viruses cause cold symptoms. Most colds are caused by rhinoviruses, not coronaviruses.

I wasn’t saying that as if there’s much of an option, but that is precisely what will happen if we kick off back to our jobs any time soon.
And obviously there are going to be a lot of Americans that set foot outside thinking, “I’m not going to let this virus win! I’m going to resist this occupation!” and so many of them will end up in a refrigerated truck.

Nah.

Vaccines can stimulate longer-term memory in the immune system than the virus itself does not.

And the same government is also outlawing public gatherings of more than two people and issuing fines to anyone who breaks the quarantine laws

Not true. For many businesses, mine included, there are plans being developed where rolling shifts, permanently moving people to remote, reorganization of facilities to allow social distancing and other changes would allow a gradual return to 'normal' business. It's not possible for all businesses, but it's not all black and white.

Noblesse Obliged
Apr 7, 2012

My hot take on this is that there is a short shelf life for goodwill on these restrictions that every nation has where people are willing to listen and obey.

As time goes on, depending on the culture and the system each nation has eventually people will decide that they have had enough and will begin to fight restrictions.

It is likely better that the restrictions are lifted rather than collapse, as collapse is basically a mass rejection of governance. It will begin with a small segment breaking and fighting the restrictions and then gain momentum on its own.

Even the most authoritarian regime has never tried to contain their whole populace for years. I don’t think any nation could actually achieve this.

So the big question is where the risk/reward line is in the sand. When will the risk of deaths become less than the risk of complete political collapse.

Also a future risk is if the restriction work and this isn’t as bad as everyone feared there will be a not insignificant reactionary movement to restrict government from ever having the power to restrict society in the same way again.

This is still reopening the economy. I'm not opposed to a shift in what that means, but at a certain point the economy has to start again. At the end of the day, factory workers, mechanics and other hands on types are going to be going back, too, and if they don't we're all gonna die anyway.
