lol, what? because the underfunded unemployment office can't handle a million people in a week? drat governor.

While posting this I noticed today's numbers came out. 153 deaths.

from https://covid.arena-ai.com/ (also not a great model but)

>The IHME team’s model is not an epidemiological model but an empirical one, based on the assumption that the cumulative number of COVID-19 deaths follows a specific curve shape / trajectory in time, and that this curve “shape” should be shared across countries and states. This model is also trained on deaths (as opposed to confirmed cases) over time – an explicit choice by the IHME to ensure the model is robust against observational bias in testing.

There's still like 30k new cases every day and either we have a very high 8% death rate or a lot of people have it who don't know or weren't tested.

This is actually great because it's our best shot at the end of American hegemony. While other countries are going to go through a correction where they spike in cases and deaths because they hosed it up early (UK, Sweden, etc.) they'll probably put in place effective policies and practices eventually. The US is basically going to have this spread out for much much longer as there are flare-ups of COVID-19 across the country for a long time to come because you have that critical mass of people who are actively inimical towards science, logic, and their fellow human beings.

right

the data I've seen has suggested smokers are less likely to get sick but more likely to have worse outcomes when they do get sick, so I was curious whether that's been contradicted by newer data, or if this is a case of conventional wisdom saying something should be so, and not data showing that it is so

if that makes sense

smokers tend to already be coughing and feeling like poo poo so cases are more likely to go under the radar

R(t) is really hard to calculate if you don't know how long people are contagious for, but if you assume they are really only contagious for a week before isolating themselves then NYC has an R of like 0.5 which is good, it means that it will eventually go away, but it is way higher than what the IHME models assume.

there's pretty good evidence that the rate has slowed significantly and now we want to get back on track so the rest of the people can get it
