So I just read about a depression vs recession. Since 1854 there has only been one depression: The Great Depression. Meanwhile we haven't hit a second quarter of lower economic performance yet so according to the rules we are not yet in a recession (though we certainly will be in one). Thoughts on if we'll match the Great Depression after this? Keep in mind if we stick to social distancing etc. (Lol) then by this time next year at least some economic activity will return. Technically speaking it would probably be up from Q4 so not a long term depression (which needs to last like 10 years). Thoughts?

Services make up too much of the economy. Restaurants aren't going to just go back to pre Covid volumes. Same with hotels, cafes, gyms etc. Rehiring employees is another fixed cost, especially if they're fully laid off instead of furloughed. Spending money on services requires confidence that consumers won't have for awhile. That's why we need a massive bottom up stimulus, hopefully a combination of UBI and infrastructure. Government spending goes right to GDP, especially when it's given to those who actually spend the money. Democrats should be pushing for infrastructure. Planning can start now, with lots of the office work, permitting, design etc being able to be done by remote workers. Give Donald his money for the loving wall in exchange for smart grid buildout and light rail in cities

tatankatonk posted:re: Gilead's miracle drug yeah i've been saying it's poo poo for several months and anyone expecting this to be the miracle cure is lol there's a reason that china and taiwan stopped trialing it early on and it's because it's both ineffective and led to organ failure and GI bleeding. there's also a reason gilead has been eeriely silent on it overall, like they're not stupid they know they could be juicing their stock big time if they kept leaking articles and getting it up on fox news for big wet daddy to go ALL AMERICAN-MADE GILEAD HAS CURE! WILL COME SOON! ITS OVER FOR THE CHINESE FLU but they even that would be stupid because they know it's not working and actively harmful

If we get the sort of hyperinflation predicted by austrian types, it's the end of society as we know it (lol) Once they start printing money and things don't immediately go to poo poo, I'd like to think people start realizing that socialism is not only possible, but in fact ideal

Also inflation is more of a currency/trade issue than really a issue of monetary policy, all the "lessons" of the 1970s were generally made up.

the fed hasn't lent one cent to "main street" yet, they were still taking comments until today and could cancel the program completely (but going ahead with something small and inadequate would save face)
