When this whole coronavirus debacle kicked off, Finland were supposed to have a huge stockpile of PPE for a crisis like this, but nobody had kept the stockpile up to date, so most of it was years past its use by date.

As an immediate solution, Finland ordered two million euros' worth of PPE stuff from China. When the equipment turned up, it became apparent that it did not meet the EU's standards for medical equipment (it was advertised to), but the hope was that it could still be used in non-medical fields like elderly care.

Well, the shipment was distributed around Finland and it turns out that using it gives the user "severe" skin conditions, rashes and itches, so it's literally unusable.

I feel like most people in this thread could've seen this coming.

It's actually far weirder than that. Those failed masks came from a Finnish woman who runs an operation in Estonia-based beautician, and she sourced the masks from even shadier folks. All those failed mask may have come from the Hells Angels, who found them after falling off a truck in China. So those useless mask are Chinese, maybe, sort of, it's weird.

Not saying it's entirely showmanship(possible they were doing maintenance while the place was empty), but the fact of showmanship in that "we're already up and running, look at our electricity consumption" scenario is something you'd expect them to consider speaks to the level of government distrust that's already present.

No, the air pollution has increased quite a bit over the past few weeks so they are ones that had been shut down. What capacity they're at is hard to say but the pollution doesn't lie, there's definitely more industry running than there had been. There's a lot more car traffic too which contributes some.

The times has an article about how "Beijing finds that messages that work at home can backfire abroad."

The CPC's extreme mouthiness these days is so tone deaf. They can pretend at home that they aren't responsible for the virus they spawned and spread around the world, and all the tragedy and catastrophe it continues to cause for everyone, but it doesnt work outside their domestic totalitarianism and it just reminds people of what they did, and upsets them because people don't like being treated like that.

Hopefully the rest of the world can work together to reduce China's GDP significantly year by year until they reform their ways.

That is sort of impressively bad. It hadn't considered it was also toxic angle. I am wondering what is the next step. Are they radioactive? Spontaneously combusts as it ages? Filled with cancer? Who knows!

Speaking of tone death, headless chickens and fake numbers :mensch:.

quote:

The Chinese city of Wuhan, where the coronavirus originated last year, has raised its official Covid-19 death toll by 50%, adding 1,290 fatalities.
...
A spokesman for China's National Health Commission, Mi Feng, said the new death count came from a "comprehensive review" of epidemic data.

In its daily news conference, the foreign ministry said accusations of a cover-up, which have been made most stridently on the world stage by US President Donald Trump, were unsubstantiated. "We'll never allow any concealment," a spokesman said.

Even the BBC analysts who are usually pretty soft is starting to :thunk:.

quote:

Wuhan's death toll increase of almost exactly 50% has left some analysts wondering if this is all a bit too neat.

For months questions have been asked about the veracity of China's official coronavirus statistics.

The inference has been that some Chinese officials may have deliberately under-reported deaths and infections to give the impression that cities and towns were successfully managing the emergency.

If that was the case, Chinese officials were not to know just how bad this crisis would get in other countries, making its own figures now seem implausibly small.

The authorities in Wuhan, where the first cluster of this disease was reported, said there had been no deliberate misrepresentation of data, rather that a stabilisation in the emergency had allowed them time to revisit the reported cases and to add any previously missed.

That the new death toll was released at the same time as a press conference announcing a total collapse in China's economic growth figures has led some to wonder whether this was a deliberate attempt to bury one or other of these stories.

Then again, it could also be a complete coincidence.

I am thinking more in the lines of sanctions and joining the trade war that Trump botched from the start by pissing everyone off. Re-examination of every relationship with China. Limiting China's influence in existing international institutions and isolating theirs.

Openly endorsing Taiwan to either join or observer status and cleaning house out of top level WHO would be a start.

gently caress! gently caress! loving! FUCKFUCKFUGKCUGKFUGK!

Expedia just sent my wife an email, and my mother in law's May 23rd flight back to China has been cancelled. I've been looking at alternative flights from Calgary to Changchun (or really anywhere nearby) and I would have to spend literal thousands of dollars to have her go from Calgary, to Vancouver, to Tokyo, to Shanghai, to Changchun. (I'm talking like $4-15k for a 27 hour flight). Or try and send her through the states (which is not an option).

My plan was to send her back May 23rd. Fly my wife and son back June 16th, and I drive back June 30th with the car loaded to the gills after shipping all of our stuff back to Ontario. Looks like we're all going to be piling into a car together and almost everything we own will have to be shipped.
