Celebrities and sports people are already starting to talk about their worries about the coronavirus vaccine (even though it might still be a year to 18 months away). Top ranked men's tennis player Novak Djokovic has said that he's opposed to a vaccine and if they make it compulsory for players to take the vaccine before they're allowed to play in tournaments again he would have to make a "difficult decision".

Personally I think you'd have to be mad or have some significant Covid risk factors to be lining up to take the first batch of vaccines. There's enough fuckups with drugs when there isn't massive time pressure, and the commercial incentive to get something approved has probably never been higher for any drug in the history of modern medicine. I hate to think what complications are being handwaved away or deliberately under reported in trials.

This isn't coming from some addled anti-vaxxer concerned about autism or whatever, I happily get flu shots yearly and booster shots of various things before travelling etc. I'd just rather stay inside for 6 months rather than risk lifelong immune complications from some rushed vaccine.

Hopefully part of that is the fear that a vaccine will be rushed out without being properly tested. My trust in the CDC/FDA has never been lower, I'd be reluctant to get a vaccine right away unless it has been verified safe by independent academic institutions and multiple public health agencies outside of the US.

Yeah same, I do have all manners of vaccinations, and have no reservations whatsoever normally but I am not a big fan of rushing to get some some hurriedly cobbled together vaccine before it has been tested and proven safe. There is a reason development takes 4+ years normally.

Apparently we may have to keep social distancing until at least 2022 just to keep the hospitals from becoming overwhelmed if this Harvard study proves to be true.

I...don't see some states taking this lightly here in the US. People can't even handle the less than 60 days we've been doing it now. 2 years would be catastrophic for them. And for the world's economy.

every single instance of outbreak in history suggests not only will we be socially distancing until 2022, we'll be doing it again in 2024-25, 2030, and then once more in 2045

I wouldn't.

If you need to buy cardboard-only frozen meals, I'd suggest giving them a solid scrub with soapy water (it works about as well on inanimate objects as it does on human skin) first. You don't have to soak the cardboard, just make sure a fair amount of soapy suds make their way over the whole surface, that's the important part in killin' the virus' lipids, then a quick rinse to wash the soap off, and you can dry it off with a paper towel or something.

If you have proper disinfecting wipes or something, you can use that instead.

If you have cardboard meals with plastic bags containing the actual food inside the exterior cardboard box, you can just take the interior packaging out of the exterior (just dump it out without touching it in the process), then put the interior packaging in the freezer (handy for pizzas and so forth).

Freezing something with the 'roni on the outer surface won't seem to do anything to get rid of it, as far as we can tell. The SARs family loves cold temperatures. Important to know for the coming warm seasons, particularly pertaining to frozen treats (ideally, the safest sort would be individually wrapped treats packaged into an exterior box that you can pull off the 'dump out of the box' method with, since no human hands have touched those interior wrapped items, generally).

Don't just splash some soapy water on it; wipe it down with bleach or alcohol if you have it. The study that looked at the temperature ranges necessary to kill coronavirus also looked at various cleaning agents, and found that basically all of the standard stuff works immediately but when they used soapy water they had to soak their samples for ~5 minutes before they could no longer detect viable viruses. It's possible that splashing soapy water on a surface is enough to bring the viral load below whatever threshold is necessary to infect a person, but there's no reason to take that chance.

does this mean that alcohol based hand sanitizer works better on your hands than washing with soap and water? I remember hearing a bunch of stuff from the news about how washing your hands is the best way to kill it, and hand sanitizer should only be relied on if you can't wash your hands. it kinda reminded me of the whole "only doctors/nurses need masks" thing you heard everywhere from a month ago, so I've been doing both (washing then sanitizing) because my megacorp sent me two cases of germ-x as a consolation prize for having to work during the plague
