2 days 11 hours 43 mins today I think this is the plan... Plan A stay at 5 and draft Tua trade up from 18 to draft a tackle Plan B If somebody trades up for Tua, stay at 5 and take a tackle trade up from 18 to draft Jordan Love

I have no idea what to think of Jordan Love. If we draft him then we'll have like 18 months of going " maybe he'll be good?"

Bob McGinn's linebacker column is up: https://theathletic.com/1760294/2020/04/21/mcginns-nfl-draft-series-scouts-on-top-linebackers/ quote:This is the 36th year Bob McGinn has written an NFL Draft Series. Previously, it appeared in the Green Bay Press-Gazette (1985-’91), the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (1992-’17) and BobMcGinnFootball.com (2018-’19). Through 2014, scouts often were quoted by name. The series reluctantly adopted an all-anonymous format in 2015 at the request of most scouts. lol the NFL is 100% going to gently caress up Isaiah Simmons.

Catfish Noodlin posted:Bob McGinn's linebacker column is up: I don't like Simmons at all he doesn't know how to tackle. He's just a heat seeking missile. His TFLs are mostly bullshit. He got most of them against UNC and Syracuse which pound the hell out of the ball without a lot of quality up front. Clemsons defense just walloped them. Same with Florida State, kinda. His coverage skills are massively overrated too. Really fast and can get to the ball but no hands whatsoever. His three picks this year were all gimmes. Dabo is super underrated at developing team concepts in his players. It's part of the reason Clemson became a powerhouse. The coaching is just superb quality. Clemson graduated a ton of talent but the overall quality didn't seem to go down despite this. Because of that Simmons got to feast all this year on team tackling and great position play. Pull up highlights and just watch him. There's this one against Georgia Tech where the team had a great flush out of a QB on a play action that forced the QB to cross the field back to the right side right into Simmons' arms. It's like that constantly. He just wracks up so many tackles from sticking to his spot and playing it instead of going out and finding a tackle. That being said he did show up pretty great in the playoffs this year and sticking to your position on the field isn't a knock, especially when you're a top tier athlete. I just don't think he's worth a top 5 pick this year. Definitely top 25 and his stuff is coachable, although I never really trust LBs that tackle weakly. Tackling people in the NFL is hard as gently caress and hurts like hell. You see athletic LBs disappear all the time because of it. For the other guys that's a whacky LB listing. Gay gets hate because he developed no real talent and just ran around all day. That was 100% Moorhead's fault who had no idea how to run a defense to the point where they just went and hired Mike Leach because none of these kids know how to play defense anyway. Troy Dye is like the same exact player as Simmons and will probably get snapped up way before where they listed him. Jacob Phillips was the guy who enabled Queen to shine all this year. He was the real workhorse of that defense. Him and Stingley Jr. just playing their hearts out to make other people look better. Not an exceptional athlete though but definitely has a NFL body. Shaun Bradley should be talked up more he has a ton of untapped potential. Blew up the combine but like the draft blurb said he's not that great on the field. Weak tackling and kind of stiff when breaking on the ball carrier. Still though he should easily make a NFL roster on special teams. Malik Harrison sucks and is JAG. Probably will get taken late as a special teamer or rotational LB. Same with Tanner Muse. I don't think Kenneth Murray has problems going inside. They made him do it a lot, it was part of how they closed out games. Tons of blitzs while they were up by two scores or more and they asked him to occupy blockers on run defense. He's not the strongest at the point of attack but he still works and gets past blockers. He's not the worlds best tackler and he's kind of thin but like I said previously with Queen the NFL is emphasizing being in your position and gang tackling more and more. I think he's way more complete than Simmons.

A lot of similar points that we've made about some of those linebackers, even going so far as to list Baun as an off-ball guy which is a position he's never played. But he is small. I really wonder what he will turn out to be. Simmons is so confusing because he is just garbage at taking at blocks, I legitimately am not sure if he can play ILB, put me down as one of those scouts who thinks his best position would be nickel linebacker or strong safety. But if he can learn, I mean the potential is there. I still see him as more of a Derwin James type than anything else, except bigger. Anyways, I thought this was kind of interesting, John Lynch explaining his draft setup: quote:John Lynch held his usual pre-draft press conference on Monday not from the boardroom at 49ers headquarters where the event usually takes place but from the guest house in his backyard where his parents stay when they visit from San Diego.

Let’s see let’s see gonna go over my ol’ notes here Baun will be good To be a scout you need to watch football Simmons as a 4-3 OlB or else why?? Herbert looks lovely. He misses easy throws and he’s nowhere near close. A lot. He throws very i catchable balls. Jesus god please no Herbert. Tua is best case and Love at anything under 5 i won’t hate. I'm always going to buy my avatar back if someone gives me red text. I'll make an exception if Herbert ends up not being a bust. I feel so strongly that hes going to be garbage if he ends up a consistent top 10 quarterback and someone wants to give me a red text avatar to give me poo poo about it I'll commit to not changing it back. I've literally never been more sure that somebody was going to be garbage in the NFL.

See I'm not just not confident enough to make pronouncements like this anymore, after a several guys I didn't like at all ended up performing decently. Josh Allen, Daniel Jones, Drew Lock to be specific (I wasn't super down on Lock, just thought he was a third round developmental guy). Herbert has a lot of qualities that can help you succeed in the NFL. A lot of bad things about his game, but plenty of NFL-ready traits as well. Like a lot of situations I think it will depend heavily on where he ends up and who coaches him I will say I think being down on Tua is foolish. He's probably the most complete quarterback in the draft and I'm not that concerned about the injury stuff. Some people have been claiming he will fall, I don't think he will he'll go in the top 5 in my opinion.

I think the thing about Isaiah Simmons is there's like three teams in his projected "range"(Lions/Giants/Dolphins) who have a defensive scheme that can seemingly slot him in and cover up some of his positional woes. If you wanna play him as a stack linebacker, you've got base, nickel, and dime fronts where all the interior gaps are filled by linemen. Same thing works as an edge/OLB, and there's no reason that can't be an overhang or weakside only thing as well. You've also got an abidance of "Big Nickel" looks with a safety as a hybrid slot defender, as well as a wide variety of other stuff(including a traditional SS box role).

I'm amazed that none of these GMs have a decent internet connection at a desk in a study or home office where they can just plug their laptop in. Having to get some extra phone lines, sure - I get that but jfc working out of a dining room seems really dumb. There's been plenty of players like Simmons succeed and there's plenty of schemes that either use a bigger nickel/safety hybrid and they either cover, blitz or thump. Its just whether or not he's smart enough to handle the changes and willing to do the dirty work when required. Most guys that have played that role really well have been pretty smart dudes by NFL standards and he scored disastrously on the wonderlic. The toughness thing isn't great either. Thomas Davis at least was known as a glass eater coming out and he certainly played that way his entire career. Tyrann Mathieu is kind of the same mold. That being said I think at worst you're getting a linebacker who can cover and wrap up. I don't think he'd ever be the inside guy changing the defense at the line but I think he can absolutely be a solid player. I also always think you've just got to take a late round flier on guys like Shaquille Quarterman, and Weaver. So many times you see linebackers who can just read and tackle and know how to call a defense and teams ignore them because they're not elite athletes. Then they come into the league as mid and late rounders and play for ten years and make about a million tackles. They're like the linebacker equivalent of receivers who are 6'0 and run a 4.55 but never dropped a pass in college who for some reason slip behind some 6'3 dude who can't catch covid on a crusie ship but runs a 4.39. Chris Borland springs to mind. Dude made a million tackles and knew how to play and was great (I know he quit but still) the guy he replaced as well, Bowman was slow as poo poo coming out and undersized and ended up a 4 time all pro. https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/armando-salguero/article242192911.html TLDR: Tua medically cleared by Dolphins, Miami probably won’t trade up from 5, some belief that Miami could take a non-QB at 5 and then trade back up to land their guy. Seems crazy with the Chargers right behind us. Just take Tua at 5! quote:The Dolphins, like other teams, have been unable to get their medical people around Tua Tagovailoa since the Indianapolis Combine in February because of the NFL rules installed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
