Welp, at least I managed to get toilet paper. They've now got two haphazard piles of literally Italian TP (actually, I didn't get a closer look at one of them - might have been Romanian), so now I'm the proud owner of a pacco convenienza of 8 rolls of "Decorata e Profumata" toilet paper from Apulia. I mean, I guess, but even so it would still be weird that enough Italian TP exists to fill (some of) the German demand.

Also, when I was in Apulia last year, 0% of the public toilets I used had seats - it was always just the bowl. Most of the cabins didn't have locks either, so I guess they're all Heimscheißer, at least all the way down there

So, First Aid on Oktoberfest, the 9/11 briefing, that was eerie.

I have done 15 consecutive years of First Aid service for the Red Cross at Oktoberfest, but stopped ~5 years ago for various reasons, not least because I felt “too old for that poo poo” at 35.

Back then, they only decided Oktoberfest was a go on 14.09.2001, police presence had been massively ramped up, roads around Oktoberfest had been closed for traffic except taxis and everybody was on edge. They even had a ABC team ready in case of “dirty bombs” or chemical attacks.

Normally, we would meet in the cafeteria of the First Aid station to be briefed in the morning every year. But after 9/11 the briefing took place outside and we had an extremely emotional moment of silence for the emergency workers who died in the Towers.
I can’t remember the briefing word for word but the gist of it was if something happens, it will get ugly, as there will be hundreds of casualties and wounded. Plus there is no way to stop mass panic spreading and people trampling each other. Even a false bomb threat (on average there is 1 every day during Oktoberfest) becoming public would cause a panic for sure. The very clear instruction was: if anything should happen, run the OPPOSITE way, find a relatively safe spot out of the way of the fleeing people and wait for instruction, do NOT attempt to help anybody unless you get the go ahead from dispatch.

Our “captain” ended his speech along the lines of “Ihr seid alle freiwillig hier, und dafür danken wir euch. Keiner kann sagen, was dieses Jahr auf uns zukommt, und wir sind alle unsicher. Deswegen können wir nicht von euch verlangen, dass ihr heute da raus geht.“ And then there was an extremely long moment of quiet and everybody was basically eyeing each other and checking what their pals would do. You could tell everybody was on edge and feeling uneasy. In the end, everybody stayed. But that year it just wasn't the same.

I dunno if I can convey what that was like, I guess you had to be there.

:neckbeard: Is the Kotzhügel gonna feature too?

You asked about the Pisshügel: This grass covered hill behind the beer tents turns into a muddy, piss soaked stinking mattress for hordes of drunks approximately 10 minutes after Oktoberfest opens on day 1. Whenever you pass by there, you will see people sleeping, puking, pissing or even trying very badly to have sex on this poor excuse of what was once grass. A pretty standard conversation with dispatch would be: “Trage 6, Einsatz für sie, Brunzberg hinter den Zelten, Passant meldet da liegt einer” – Me: „Einer? Da liegen Hunderte“ – „Ja ich weiß schon, hilft nix, geht’s halt hin und suchts euch einen aus“.

So we would make our way to the Pisshügel and try to find the person who called the emergency in. If they were still there, we would ask them to point the patient out to us, which usually meant a random drunk they didn't know. Standard procedure was: Walk up to the alleged patient, shake them a bit until they start responding and ask them “Alles klar?” and once they said “past scho” oder “Lass mir mei rua” we would leave. And then thoroughly clean our shoes before going inside the station. This would happen about 5 times per shift.

Also I went for a bike ride today and my skin got all red and itchy, so I guess I'm staying inside until mid July. People in parks don't seem to care about social distancing, but the ones carrying groceries were also wearing mask so that's fine. These days 2 police ladies on police horses ride past my house every day, presumably to intimidate some park people. But I do like the horses.

Once during Wiesn I found a drunk girl on a subway train, some guy was sitting next to her and posing her and taking photos. After that guy left I tried to wake her up, but she didn't respond to me shaking her, so when I saw a Sanitäter at the next station I told him I found an unconscious girl and he jumped on the train and pulled her out. She walked out on her own legs though. I'm still not sure if I did the right thing there.

Moving next to a sleeping stranger and physically shaking her felt intensely creepy. While the guy was there, I assumed they were a group. There were a few other people in the train car who didn't respond to the situation at all. Since she was able to wake up and walk with the healthcare guy her situation can't have been that dire. And now Hopper writes that unresponsive drunk people just want to be left alone.

Maybe she didn't even notice the photo guy and was left wondering why someone called the red cross on her for taking a nap.

Some years later I personally passed out on the train and a bunch of people picked me up and even made me a bed from their own jackets, so it's not like Munich train riders have a general policy of ignoring unconscious people.

Well, you did absolutely the right thing by trying to help her, no question about it whatsoever. The situation that Hopper described is totally different, not even comparable.

There's a huge difference between passed out women and passed out men alone in public places -- passed out women are far more vulnerable in this situation, and you should always, always try to help them.

I get that sometimes it's a judgement call, but better err on the side of caution I'd say.

Yeah it is ALWAYS the right thing to make sure helpless women are safe. Police, Ambulance, whatever it takes. What I am talking about is our routine at Wiesn where I used my experience and common sense to decide whether or not to help a drunk guy. We never left women or minors like that, exclusively drunk men who were in no danger of choking or otherwise hurting themselves. Basically just "Rausch ausschlafen" by themselves.

I have had to deal with victims of rape, attempted rape, molestation and at one point I called the cops on a guy who was obviously a pedo hitting on some kids. October fest is a bad place for women.

In my circle of friends whenever we go out there to drink, i.e. once a year in my case, if a woman in our company wants to go home, one of the men will escort her and make sure she is sitting in the U-Bahn, or Taxi before we leave her. No exceptions.

Tonight I had a creepy dream that was just a wild mess of slime, worms and parasites. At one point I was asked by an elf woman to defeat worms with my bare hands. At which point a huge white lump hanging from the bathroom ceiling burst and spilt tons of worms and slime over the ground. I dream-vomited so hard I choked myself awake.

Turns out this was caused by my throat being sore and swollen. Couldn't even get the slime out, regardless of how hard I coughed, probably because the swelling was too bad.

Could be a great political opportunity to crack down on the food industry and then invest more money into combating child obesity. Also, crank up tabacco taxes and move people over to vaping. It sucks so much that we are stuck with the CDU in power and none of this is ever going to happen :(

You know very well that SPD and CDU will "fight" obesity by cutting down on Kassenleistungen and requiring people to get additional insurance on the open market to cover anything that could in any way relate to bodyweight.

(Also, Covid-19 mainly killing via cardiovascular aspects had been well known for weeks.)

I think the fact that almost all of the people had very serious preconditions is new and only something that you can learn from doing autopsies.

The data they are citing is from 85! autopsies, 20 in Switzerland and 65 in Germany. The ones in Germany are done by the same professor who likes to claim "ALL OF THEM HAVE VORERKRANKUNGEN AND, I HAVE TO SAY THIS, EVEN THOUGH PEOPLE ALWAYS PUT YOU IN *THAT* CORNER FOR YOUR ETHICS WHEN YOU SAY THINGS LIKE THIS, THEY WOULD HAVE DIED ANYWAY" in allcaps on Markus Lanz, and then his own report lists covid-19 as cause of death in 61 of 65 cases. Dude gives of highly creepy "let it cull the weak vibes" when on TV. Of course that doesn't stop him from going "by now we have done over 100 autopsies and none of them didn't have any Vorerkrankungen" now for this article, and when they finally release the new data it's probably gonna be like 95 of 100 with covid-19 as cause of death again. It's the Heinzenberg way of (not) publishing scientific studies and gaining lots of publicity for it.
