turd in my singlet posted:Why is it meat specifically that's having outbreaks like this? Is there no other industry in America that stuffs tons of people into a cramped factory and didn't shut down? production of a lot of things is largely automated, unlike breaking down animal carcasses which the meat industry turned from a skilled union (white) man’s occupation in places like the Chicago stockyards to mostly being done by immigrants in the south and other anti union states. so while before the union meatman was able to know and break down a carcass himself, the modern production line is like 50 people shoulder to shoulder, each performing one cut or action.

for example there have been only two cases nationally at purina plants, largely due to kibble production being automated, so the plant has few workers to begin with and they mostly are there to make sure the machines are running

LA county has high infection numbers because we actually make tests trivially easy to get Also we have all the people If your county doesn't have a lot of infections, it's because it doesn't have much going on

There are other factors mentioned earlier, like cramped conditions, spotty inspections, and reliance on an immigrant work force which is intimidated to keep violations from being reported. But something about working in a corpse factory dripping with viscera and body fluids makes you more likely to get sick

Xenophobia is a true og. tactic to steer the attention away from your own failings... less of a moral failing and more of a canny political move. recognizing this is how to gain harvard tenure btw.

However, many of them are being done on at-risk hospital employees who are at a heightened risk of contracting it
