This is a neat callback to the "Frozen Elsa injects pregnant Spiderman with syringe" craze of 2016. Chuds and other forms of idiots were dead sure that pedophiles were using comments on the videos to negotiate prices for sex child slaves. Nothing could convince them that the gibberish random messages were just children hammering on the tablet screens. I mean, why would a secret pedophile cabal use a Tor message board, Signal or encrypted email for child auctions when there are YT comments available?

It's the same line of logic that claims that the Illuminati are mysterious, untouchable individuals who can, and do, effortlessly slaughter whistleblowers in order to cover up their true, super-secret nefarious plans for us all... but also gloat and taunt us by inserting super obvious secret messages and imagery in the Superbowl halftime show that spell out their entire agenda and who, specifically, is involved. You just need to know what to look out for!

Almost all of the modern movement is post-2010 and based on the sovereign citizen movement. The mechanics are pretty much the same, e.g. CAPITAL LETTERS, magic legalese spells, not needing a driver's license to drive, courts not having jurisdiction, "I refuse to create joinder", natural rights, etc. There are some minor German particularities like a weird obsession with documents not being valid unless they are signed by hand, but it's mostly the same.

Where it totally differs is the mythology. When the huksters localized that poo poo they based it on the weird obscure Reichsbürger conspiracy from the 60s(?) because none of the US mythology applied to Germany. The modern "cannon" most people agree on now is that Germany is still occupied by the Allies and the German government is simply a private limited liability company(called GmbH in German) that you don't have to "trade" with, if you don't want to. The German Reich still exists in the borders of 1937 but has no legitimate government and the only authority on German soil is the Allied Control Council. The German national ID card called "Personalausweis" is actually an employee ID card of the GmbH (the word "personal" has multiple meanings in German also used to refer to employees in a company).

There has been some pretty funny and tragic stories coming out of the movement the last couple of years. Like, I remember a story a couple of years ago where a family with 6 children fled from German Child Protective Services to Russia to appeal to the Russian government to protect them from "children abductions" because their home was in the former Soviet occupation zone. After Russian authorities freaked out and told them to get lost, they lived in a VW van in some parking lot with their 6 children for months. At some point they gave up and tried to get asylum for a couple of years, which Russia continually refused. The last thing I heard is that they received temporary refugee status on "humanitarian" grounds last year so that they could get an apartment and don't have to live in a van. IRC the Russian CPS tried to take away their children too cause they are clearly not mentally healthy enough to raise children and a van is not an environment for 6 children anyway. Also, people are writing "notarized" letters to Putin and Trump all the time to help them out of legal troubles, cause they are the only legal authority according to them.

e: found an English language article about them from 2016. It's from a British right wind rag so take it for what it is

There's a guy named Randy Farmer who is one of a handful of pioneers in the design of virtual communities in online games. Unexpected channels of communication is one of the issues he saw when working on a game for Disney that was never released. Later on, the same issue was seen in ToonTown. Players that want to communicate will find some way.

http://habitatchronicles.com/2007/03/the-untold-history-of-toontowns-speedchat-or-blockchattm-from-disney-finally-arrives/

quote:

As I starting daydreaming about how to get chat back into this project, we moved on to what activities the kids might do in the now-chat-free HercWorld. It was standard fare: Collect stuff, ride stuff, shoot at stuff, build stuff… Oops, what was that last thing again?

"…kids can push around Roman columns and blocks to solve puzzles, make custom shapes, and buildings.", one of the designers said.

I couldn’t resist, "Umm. Doesn’t that violate the Disney standard? In this chat-free world, people will push the stones around until they spell Hi! or F-U-C-K or their phone number or whatever. You’ve just invented Block-Chattm.

Another example is in the comments.

quote:

A variation on sharing secret chat codes that ended up being more prevalent in my experience was to jump the number of times designated by the number in the code (always followed by “okay”, to make sure the other toon was sure the giver was done jumping, and a second to make sure the receiving toon got the number) and for letters using speedchat phrases that began with the same letter– which is what made more “zany” speedchat phrases worth purchasing from the cattlelog– but cycle through enough codes and one can easily find one that works with no more than the default options.

Essentially the issue is that as long as two players can interact with each other somehow, there will be some way to set up an encoding that turns those interactions into letter or numbers or whatever information you need.

Neat!

I was obsessed with numbers channels (and imo rightly so, they are awesome) when my wife conned me into playing that game. And I was like, wow, it would be almost trivial to translate crop placement into a code. So good to know I'm not the only one.

I wonder what the chances are that qanon is so popular due in large part to how many people have actually suffered from or witnessed child sexual abuse without being able to do anything about it, because I can see how getting involved in the Qanon community could play as a maladaptive coping mechanism for what is for many a literally unspeakable trauma.

Nigerian 419 scammers were doing it on visitor books (remember them?) ever since websites had visitor books. There's a particular Igbo phrase that translates to something like "Hey guys I'm here" that you can Google to find hundreds of them, now mostly in comments sections of long-abandoned blogs.

They're used as a pseudonymous way for gangs to communicate with each other - it's in a pretty dense patois of English, Igbo and other Nigerian languages, street slang and their own internal jargon, a sort of cyberspace thieves cant, so completely incomprehensible to outsiders - and is mostly boasting about wins, warning of police activity, and selling marks between the gangs (if you do get taken by one gang, there are others specialising in followup scams pretending to be police or government bodies investigating the first scam - a sufficiently gullible and rich person can end up going through half a dozen cycles of this).

They do acknowledge it, it's just that like with a whole lot of other uncomfortable aspects of Qanon they've accepted the standard bullshit excuse: any child porn that got posted on 8chan or any other alt right hub was posted by leftists (or I guess "the cabal") trying to shut them down.

That excuse is from the GamerGate days and is older than Qanon, but like most things Qanon it used to be used by people who knew it was bullshit but now that Qanon is bigger than chan culture it's just accepted dogma.

it's not budgetary reasons, they got kevin sorbo money! it's everything they don't spend the money on because they're not as concerned about script, acting (aside from a few notables), or doing anything above and beyond "acceptable". i've never seen an artfully lit shot, a dynamic camera angle, no hint of "artistry", if that guy is right the future is full of flat, wide shots, shot/reverse shot, bad green screen, and tons of christian movies that accidentally make christians the bad guys.
more and more they lean into the "THEY don't want you to see this movie!". i'm pretty sure kirk cameron broke that with his prosperity christmas, though.

Whenever Qanon or Qanon-adjacent people actually mention 4chan, they usually make it seem like this dark web-esque mysterious den of hackers, whose users are well-connected white-hat whistleblowers risking it all to bring us the truth. They tend to leave out the mountains of porn and anime discussion threads.
