Pensacola has what's called the "Graffiti Bridge," a train bridge that you can spray paint any time you like, I don't know if that's because the police just stopped policing it or if there is some kind of ordinance. It's usually filled with topical things with an understanding of the unwritten rules of "actually make the artwork decent" or "spread some sort of positive message." Lately it's been filled with lots of Class of 2020 artwork for parents/students to take their own graduation photos, since there won't be any graduation ceremonies.

Be careful for what you wish for.

Alex Jones, David Ike and the other peddler of "truth" should have been banned years ago from social media. They preferred to wait until they amass a huge following and only then they took action because they started to be liable if something went wrong. Like mass shooting in the name of infowar or actions like that.

Am I just being hella dumb? Isn't there a difference between the two?

If one planet has a population of 9 billion, and a second planet with 1 billion, with a wish of "kill half the total population of the two planets"? Isn't the likelihood of someone from the second planet dying much lower?

There is a difference between the two, but not in that respect.

Everyone flipping their own coin is different than wiping out 50% of the total, because the coin tossing could lead to a non-50% result. There is an infinitesimally small chance that every single living being passes their coin flip, except for Thanos, and Endgame is just the Avengers chilling at the pub for three hours.

50% of the total means everyone is drawing straws. If you live, someone else has to die.

The difference between a 9 billion planet and a 1 billion planet isn't about the odds of an individual being killed; that's still 50% if you toss a coin or draw a straw. While the first planet has nine times as many deaths on average, the likelihood of an individual death is the same because it has nine times the population. The difference is that the larger planet is more likely to get a result closer to 50% (though both are going to have pretty good odds with that many tests), though that is the same with both methods.

the tale of a 9-year-old British boy who caught COVID-19 in the French Alps in January offers a glimmer of hope. The youngster, infected by a family friend, suffered only mild symptoms; he enjoyed ski lessons and attended school before he was diagnosed. Astonishingly, he did not transmit the virus to any of 72 contacts who were tested. His two siblings didn’t become infected, even though other germs spread readily among them: in the weeks that followed, all three had influenza and a common cold virus.

quote:

Real-life studies of how often children transmit COVID-19 are scarce. Researchers at the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) looked carefully at how the disease spread in 54 households, together comprising 123 adults and 116 children aged 16 or younger. They didn’t find a single family in which a child was the first patient. This study, too, began only after schools closed, says RIVM epidemiologist Susan van den Hof, but there’s additional evidence from Dutch contact tracing studies: Of 43 contacts of infected children and teens who were followed, none became infected.

Critics have noted these numbers, posted on RIVM’s website, are too small to be statistically significant. But combined with other studies, Van den Hof says, “The data all seem to be pointing in the same direction: that there is not as much transmission from children.” That helped convince the Dutch government to reopen elementary schools—and allow children’s sports teams to practice—starting next week.

Given that the small kids in my family pass on whatever bug they've been within 20m of with an efficiency on par with simply injecting it directly into my body I would err on the side of caution. But it's some small hope for some optimism.

I've been teaching elementary school for 9 years. The first year I was sick pretty much all year with some sort of cough, sniffle, shits, or sinus pressure. After that first year my immune system became godlike. Kids sneeze or cough directly into my face pretty regularly and I just rub hand sanitizer into my face and continue on. I also coach high school wrestling and roll with gross teenagers. I live in a petri dish. After that first year I have been sick only once, in eight years, with a flu that lasted 3 days.

So take that anecdote and extrapolate wild generalizations from it if you wish. I'm no scientist, just a dumbass elementary school teacher who has been posting on this dead gay forum for half his life.

jfc. We started taking people temps here at work a couple weeks ago and no one has had a reading above 97°. I've been asking the plant manager to have it calibrated and he still hasn't so I went to the Director of Operations with it.

This was his response:
"The thermometer does read low but it will read an elevated temperature. We are using 99.4 as the benchmark to send someone out of the building"

I'm sure it's legit, and they have my best interests at heart, but I can't seem to find a CDC multiplier for un-calibrated thermometers anywhere...
