So as near as I can tell here in Florida, our plan for COVID 19 is basically "well, quarantine, shut down and safe at home is just too hard so 'gently caress it', we're just gonna pretend this thing doesn't exist."

Very few people are masking up and I'm already noticing an increase in traffic, human and vehicular. Aren't we just going to have a huge spike, the overrun hospitals we all feared, more cases and deaths, etc. etc.?

Near as I can tell the whole country is just not up to the challenge. What was the point of the shutdowns if we weren't going to follow through?

I mean they bought a little time for better treatment strategies to be developed

I'm of the opinion that the shutdowns don't matter for the economy either way: restaurant bookings, movie theater attendance, etc were all crashing before the shutdowns, and businesses that have reopened aren't getting enough business to stay afloat.

The economy is consumption-driven, lockdown or no lockdown, if most people or even a big chunk of people don't feel safe packing together to eat mozzarella sticks and get their buttholes waxed, the economy is hosed.

Yeah, but nobody has any money. They have even less now. What do you think wealth distribution looks like NOW after the last couple of months? It was bad before but I gut it's huge now. The stock market seems to be weathering things well enough.

And that's really what's going on.

The rich are panicking at the idea of any of us plebes realizing that WE are really the job creators. We BUY poo poo. poo poo that they sell and that makes them rich. We have plenty of cash and 0% interest loans to help out the stock market, which is how these people REALLY make money, but all we can come up with for the rest of us is $1200 and means tested UE benefits.

You'd think more people would be able to see in real time right now just how The Job Creators are really dependent on US and, in fact, who the real Job Creators are. They want us to risk our lives to earn a pittance that we ultimately give to them anyway and pay UP rather than take a hit they can well afford and part with money directly that we'll wind up giving them back anyway. We do the work that makes them rich. They play golf and write legislation for bought representatives worded in ways to make us think we're free by making us beg and astroturf armed protests in the streets for the right to go back to our lovely jobs.

4-6 weeks in and we see what happens when people can't spend money and how close we all are to being homeless. But "muh freedum!" Who's going to pay the medical bills for the next 75000 people? Why else would the rich bankroll these protests?

These motherfuckers aren't even pretending to care anymore and are convincing people they're living under a fascist regime because they can't get a haircut. Look at what's happening when our schools can't babysit our kids anymore.

We're learning all the wrong lessons from this pandemic and worker's rights or the ability to get a raise are gonna get worse now, which I didn't think was loving possible.

2 out of every 5 Americans you'll meet thinks this is great.

There seems to be a great deal of self-deception with the rich too, though. Cause letting this crisis handle itself is just going to cause greater economic collapse down the line, that even they are going to feel. I fear that more than that they don't want the poors to remember they prop up the economy, they've spent so much and so long convincing poors that the meritocracy is real and richards are the engine that keep the lights on, they've started to believe it themselves.

Or, of course, each of them is a short term FYGM greedo trying to scrape together what they can before things really go to hell.

It was one of the first things Trump said back when there were ~10 confirmed cases and he specifically said he didn't want to test more because he didn't want higher numbers.

...which is why the US has a shitton of dead now, because if they had aggressively tested and isolated, for each person they found early they could probably have saved many lives but lol that would require a basic understanding of science or at least willingness to listen to those who do.

I highly suspect the vast majority of the rich have zero ability to foresee long-term, and are 100% about short-term profits. They're just so heartless and this economic system is so horrible that that's how they succeed. Also, who cares if it causes greater economic collapse down the line? They'll just spread propaganda to convince chuds to spend more, and also get bailouts. They will not face any consequences, which is why they don't need to think about long-term - everything will work itself out for them.
