Those games are loving brutal. The reboots are unforgiving, for sure, but the originals are outright masochistic. Minimal instruction, cliff-like learning curve, and gently caress-you surprises are the norm. Even if your kit, squad comp, and tactics are perfect, there's still a good chance you'll get rng'd to oblivion. If you played the remakes first, you'll really, really miss all the QOL stuff that they added. They were basically "gently caress You: The Game". They were well made for what they were, but unless your kink is whacking yourself in the nuts with a ball peen hammer, the only thing you're missing out on is frustration.

The originals were great and still hold up as turn based strategy. Absolutely unforgiving though and that in a way almost makes them special for what they are. GuavaMovement's original LP's of UFO Defense, Terror From the Deep, and Apocalypse were notable enough that one of the cheat codes in the new one is based on it. LP internal story wise the order of release was Apoc, UFO Defense, then TFTD if you want to see the story of Col. My dad used to take me to the flea market a few miles from my house in the early to mid 90s he’d always bribe me with a couple floppy’s worth of what ever was out in shareware that month. For Duke however my older brother was at college and my dad and I visited him. He played Quake most of the weekend and I ended up buying it when we got home with my summer job money.
