The one in Austin is nice and has cool staff and is like, moderately busy on the weekends. Weekdays really not busy at all, I usually go there on a long lunch unless a set is launching on the weekend or I'm just bored.

Yeah I really like the staff at the one near me. They are all big LEGO dorks and and fun to chat with. It’s also comforting to see that there’s all types of adult LEGO buyers who are relatively normal and I’m not alone in my children’s toy hobby lol.

They’re pretty friendly there, always willing to chat about upcoming sets or show you cool details on the larger display sets

I usually stop by the Downtown Disney / Disney Springs ones when I'm traveling since I get a discount or occasionally the local mall but they tend to be more busy. Pro Tip: If you ask about the give aways or discount with purchase items even if you don't have enough of the right type of qualifying purchase and ask nicely usually the staff will give it to you. I always complete the surveys and give the store staff high marks. Edit: My May 3rd order teased me by saying it would arrive on 5/6 but the lack of updates by FedEx meant it was a cruel lie. :-) New delivery date is by the end of the day tomorrow, which would be nice to have for the weekend. tomapot fucked around with this message at 06:02 on May 8, 2020 |

The LEGO store in Valley Fair in San Jose would be OK, but it’s just too small a space. Plus, there’s a really popular potato kiosk right outside so it’s always crowded even just to get in.

Every time I think I'm ready to photograph my space command center, another part is added. I was going to first photo it when it was just the command center proper, and then suddenly I added a laboratory. And then, a small robotics lab. Then a robotic claw crane. Then a garage, and a hover-vehicle to go in it. Now I'm working on a multi-antenna communications tower... The only thing that I think will stop me is when I run out of parts. The minifigs I assembled for them are becoming impatient, awaiting the command center in their blue baseplate void

1990's and early 2000's Lego is extremely my jam. Love the base so far Brawnfire, it was a nostalgia rush to see all those cool printed consoles. The Exploriens in general never seem to crop up in any Neo-space MOCs (at least I havent' seen any amazing ones, perhaps a goon will know of some and link them), but I think it was an underrated theme.

These are all great, loving Qui Gon Jinn's side hustle as a barber and also Return of the Jedi Luke stoically brooding above a Starbucks. I do think there is something inherently more charming about the earlier Lego Star Wars sets. Something about the figures and less-is-more when it comes to all the detail on them. I've just finished putting together the 20th Anniversary Slave I and was amazed at how intricate all the Technic elements that held it all together are, its an absolute masterpiece of design imo and it saddens me that I don't think I could ever create something like it myself, at least not without spending many hours practising. Love that they finally made Zuccuss to complete the bounty hunter pack. He turned out great. The only complaint I would have is that I wish the little reward figure they included was Lando as it would have fit the set better, but I think they put him in the duffer of the wave (snow speeder) as a bit of a chase fig as he was probably quite desirable. I know that I've got the original Lego Slave I (7144) somewhere, I might try to put it together and marvel at 20 years of Lego Star Wars progress, but still just a little tiny bit prefer the original (nostalgia is a hell of a drug).

As you may have been able to tell from my space command center, I LOVE workstations. I like imagining each of the little minifigs coming in and sitting at their usual place, or wandering over to a console to do a certain task... I got an amazing little frisson when I built that drill press because I had a strong vision of the roboticist drilling a robot chassis on it, and it felt REAL. These guys look like they're having a nice calm day at work.

As much as I love them it will never not annoy the hell out of me that the UCS starfighter sets don't scale to each other at at all. Now we have all of them. They look great. and none of them look right displayed next to each other. First world problems folks. Finished about 60% of the A-Wing. As with most sets it's much bigger than I imagined from the pics. it's shaping up to be a beefier set than the Y Wing. It's a drat pretty looking set, although the overall fun of building it and attention to detail is a little drab coming off of my last big set being the Batmobile which was just such a joy to build. Still just happy I finally have a big rear end A wing. Such a good ship. veni veni veni fucked around with this message at 09:37 on May 9, 2020 |

I'm right with you, 90s Lego was dope. A lot of the themes get a lot of flak, and to be fair some of it is justified. Especially towards the end of the decade Lego was getting quite juniorised with big specialised pieces. Still, I think even the worst themes usually had a pretty good concept behind them even if the execution wasn't quite there. Exploriens were cool, but like any non-Classic Space theme all the really loud CS nerds hate it. Here's an Exploriens MOC I did last year - a mobile telescope. You'll have to forgive the half-clear dome but I only have two of those panels in blue.

What I like about it over some of the other, mainly Classic Space, mocs is that it doesn't feel out of place with the original line up of sets. It has exposed studs and Technic pins all over the place and its 100 % better for it. Don't get me wrong, I think some of the more elaborate SNOT / greebled to hell and back builds are phenomenal, but there is definitely something to be said for a build that just slots right in there with the rest of the theme. Its really cool and has an M-tron magnetiser vibe to it.

Thanks. Yeah, I know what you mean. Those smooth builds are great but I like building in this kind of style. I find it a bit easier to conceptualize how to build the kind of shape I want this way. The Mega Core Magnetizer vibe is intentional. That's easily my favourite Space set and I think it's genius how they used the big quarter-dome panel as a windscreen. I have no less than five MOCs on my shelf that have a windscreen like that.

Travelling way back in time: Nth Doctor posted:Meanwhile, the journey of seven thousand pieces begins with a single step: BIG HEADLINE posted:I'd be more worried about whatever small, wantonly-destructive little human being uses that tiny trampoline and their proximity to the finished product. For now the frame is precariously set on top of my printer while I consider ways to hide this drat thing. BIG HEADLINE's worry was completely correct. N+ith Doctor threw an enormous tantrum on the morning of the 28th, which included clearing about 15 shelf-feet of books, literal flipping of tables, and grabbing the ends of the Falcon's mandibles and yanking down on them. This ended up popping this critical piece loose: Which caused the starboard mandible to droop way lower than the other one and be held on just by some internal technic pins. When I took all the paneling off the top so I could fix it, I found two other pieces without a home that needed addressing: which was used all over for greebling. I got lucky a couple of days later and spotted one of them missing from here: The other one was a bit harder: I found it sitting kinda deep in the internal structure and had no idea where it came from. I ended up grabbing the PDF of the instructions and starting from the end, working my way forward step by step searching for the 10 times the piece is used. Turns out, it was on step 103 on page 92 of the instructions. and eventually ends up underneath the structure here: . Thank god for folks like this guy who modeled the whole drat set in stud.io, which allowed me a way to figure out how to put the piece back without too much disassembly. So now, finally, and nearly two weeks later: the whole thing is put back together. Is quarantine over yet?
