It's also a good companion film to the Big Short showing the modern day excess and also lack of ethics in Wall Street.

Best part of the movie is its connection to 1MDB money laundering and Jho Low, I bet in our lifetimes we'll see a movie about the 1MDB thing that in turn mentions Wolf of Wall Street.

That was a crazy story, highly recommend ready the book on how Jho Low and his associates pilfered a sovereign wealth fund to the tune of almost 1 billion USD with help from the usual Wall Street firms (Goldman Sachs)

It's a pretty good movie. Most people don't seem to get that it is about addiction, which the opening monologue makes pretty clear, and how greed can be addictive and destroy you as a person just as much as drugs and alcohol can

I would say the problem with the US is the same as the problem with any weakening empire, conditions are rapidly worsening for the population, but the "pride" for imperialism is still very much a part of the society as is conformable enough conditions to keep the oligarchs in power for now. It is why a geninue strongman figure is more likely than any move to democratic socialism.

Highly recommend reading the book on how Goldman, Sachs offered some of the worst investment trusts during the late roaring 20s.

(The book isn't really about them, it's about 29 and the aftermath. Funny in a way to see GS mentioned there, though.)

Again, the issue is about options. At a certain point, what is going to be the alternative to an autocrat? You can say there should be better, but that isn't how history works.

By the early 18th-century, Poland-Lithuania already had a autocrat, it was the Tsar/Tsarina. The King of Poland himself had been reduced to an administrator attempting to keep the squabbling aristocracy in line before Moscow had to clean house.
