Hey friends I know I keep asking dumb questions, but with all that's happening down south I need to stare into the abyss and recognize that my country has its own problems that need addressing.

Problem is I have no idea where to start looking. I know I want to start looking into NLM and I already passively support BLM TO (gotta step up my game on that one), but I still have rose-tinted glasses about most of Canada.

So, with full understanding that you're not here to expend labour on me, does anyone have any good additional resources to explain how we suck and how we can do better?

Good timing, I was just reading this article on our continued failure to do anything about MMIWG, even manage a loving report: https://www.chatelaine.com/opinion/mmiwg-anniversary/.

https://www.thestar.com/opinion/star-columnists/2018/03/28/systemic-racism-in-canada-is-real-folks.html this too

I'm too lazy to find the article that surrounds this, but its a pretty good summary.

Not to say it isn't bad (because it is), but I bet if you added an "Aboriginal Americans" column, you'd see a significantly different story here.

Also, I'm the disparity between the per capita rates and comparison vs national rates.

A few good Canadian media sources:

https://thetyee.ca/ will cover BC politics and environmental stuff and mostly tell you about how all our politicians are beholden to the oil industry
https://briarpatchmagazine.com/ will give you a leftist perspective on Canadian politics and the oppressive state of Canadian capitalism with a particular focus on decolonization and empowering Indigenous people as part of any real solution

Don't expect to get any actual reporting about the state of things in Canada from the CBC, Star, National Post, Globe and Mail, or whatever garbage rag is put out in your hometown

seems like there are protests in big cities and politicians doing the usual thing either talking about how systemic racism is real and someone else should do something about it or systemic racism isn't real and we live in a postracial society, but not much more than that yet

Meanwhile, we're 3 months removed from nationwide rail blockades because the government is trying to force oil pipelines across first nations land

i don't think you have much to worry about in Canada. its not that american cops are less racist, but their government response to covid-19 has been abysmal. millions in the USA are out of work and receiving no support, and evictions are starting up again. these people have nothing to lose

CERB is preventing this from happening in canada

Dreylad

Yeah, the government isn't fleecing the public AND doing jack poo poo to help poor people. CERB seems to be enough of a stopgap to prevent people from getting fed up with everything.

also as far as I can tell, canadian industry press isn't breathlessly reporting poo poo like this: https://therealdeal.com/issues_articles/how-blackstone-keeps-its-upper-hand-in-a-crisis/

The economic response to covid in the US has been a lot more generous than Canada's.

Their small business wage subsidy covers over 100% of wages (vs 75% in Canada), so small business owners who get the subsidy have no reason to fire their employees at all.

If you lost your job, you get your regular unemployment benefits plus 600 USD a week. That's a ton more money than CERB, and they've extended unemployment to cover self-employed folk like CERB has.

CERB does cover some people who wouldn't get covered under the US unemployment plan (I think mainly "if you worked last year, were not currently working when COVID hit, but were about to get to work"), but let's not pretend that Canada's economic response has been better than the US': it's been a lot worse.

Watching how poo poo the CBC has been about limiting the scope of the discourse to focus entirely on America has been incredible. Usually they aren't so blatant about it, but it feels like people are more willing to talk about how poo poo the CBC is, probably because the insularity of the Canadian mediasphere is starting to break down, for whatever reason. I assume it's because most people aren't getting paid poo poo anymore.

These responses don't exist in a vacuum, Americans still have to deal with ridiculous medical bills, but ultimately I agree that the Canadian response has been pretty pathetic.

no one is checking who is qualified for CERB. it is covering the exact people who would fall through the cracks of the US unemployment system. the people who currently have nothing to lose
