I support the cause but I really don’t know what they are thinking having it on now. Protests are not for people that value their own convenience and it is well accepted that it comes with some risk. This is not to say Covid is not a big problem, but some people feel the brutality of our modern knight class is something worth that risk and you generally can't schedule the upswell in community feels like we have right now (unless you are Murdoch et al). Besides, if it is kept peaceful (ie the police don't amp it up) the (even somewhat already low) covid risk can really be further reduced by wearing masks and trying to keep it somewhat spread out.

So why does the building industry need stimulus, is it because of all the people and businesses that would normally use their services that lost their jobs/folded, so rather than help everyone out they're just helping one part of the economy? What kind of renovations could you get for the minimum spend of $150k?

I've already seen adverts like 'Kids moving out? Why not downsize to a new house from [building company]?' It's not just renovations, remember. I figure it will be stuff like an expanded family room, a new patio/outdoor area, completely new kitchen and bathrooms throughout the entire house, with a voice activated toilet and bidet that cleans your anus to the tune of Claire de Lune. But they've made it very clear that no swimming pools or tennis courts are allowed. Even my own dad, who is genuine prime boomer, born the year WW2 ended, voted Liberal all his life thinks it's a terrible loving idea and wonders who could possibly benefit from it.

I seen on FB (I know, I know) someone post a suggestion that this is the time to go nuts doing all those national disability scheme changes to houses that are huge money but hard to fund normally. I bet a lot of the suggested changes to make disabled peoples lives significantly better (and long term cheaper to care for) are pretty much "shovel ready" in that they have known what exactly to do but without the money to do it for decades.

The building industry has seen a 50% decrease in planned new home construction and this year's tally of new homes has been revised down from about 150k to 100k. A new skyscraper in the Docklands just got its approval rushed through to help provide jobs but there is a need to provide some future surety for the workers there, just that the reno part is completely poo poo.

The renovations part is a really dumb afterthought for a variety of reasons, but people are giving it too much time in the press/socials. It really doesn't matter, almost no one will take it up, and even those that do it will be a rounding error in a spreadsheet at worst. The actual new home incentive is good. There's a shortage, and we need homes. Also, 1 in 25 people is directly employed in construction, its not a small market. They were estimating nationally going from 160k new homes in FY19/20 to less than 100k in FY20/21 At 160k new homes, we still don't meet demand, so it needed something.
