I like the RA Soviet mission where your guys get torched by explosive barrels in seconds from the start of the mission. With the speed jacked up it's hard to react in time to move them out of the way.

Just finished the Allied missions in Red Alert and they are much improved over the GDI ones. Just the fact that you can build a base in most of them is a godsend and makes them a lot more enjoyable. The 2 indoor missions loving suck though and might be worse than the Tib Dawn missions where you can't build units.

NOD progression in Jim carrey gifs. When the A-10 contrary to your expectations, can attack multiple moving targets. "Oh cool, flamethrowers!" And then the realization that much like their real life counterparts, each additional flamethrower reduces the life expectancy of your troops by half. "Oh cool, a flame tank!" And then the realization that it is mainly made out of napalm and paper. All your vehicles are delivered by airmail and the plane carrying them can be shot down. Spookydonut posted:I ran into the airstrike on one of the nod commando missions thing and just alt-f4 in disgust By any chance the mission where your forces are split in the beginning? (or one of them) I just finished it, after the nerve wracking start (you are in a hurry to clear you way into the base before the airstrikes start) it turned out to be one of the more fun nod missions. Excessive amounts of tiberium, laser obelisks.. invisible tanks.. good times I can't however, believe I played this on the Saturn back in the day, since you couldn't save scum on the console. I must have used cheat codes because this poo poo is brutal. This is the fourth time I bought this game, I question my sanity.

On a late-game mission where you start without a base, play it on easy first. It will be faster than going through on any higher difficulty and getting 1 or 2 traps further until a critical unit is injured with every attempt.

Is it just the advanced guard towers that can shoot down the cargo planes? (and SAM sites if it’s Nod vs. Nod in multiplayer)

I know that you can manually target buildable aircraft like Orcas and Nod Attack Choppers, but you cannot manually target things like cargo planes or A-10s, the AI will just attack those automatically if they happen to fly in range.

I just finished the Covert Ops missions for Nod and I know that most people in this thread already know this, but it's silly how the more difficult missions in Tib Dawn are basically just a puzzle game dressed up as a strategy war game. I posted some strategies below just to show how not intuitive some of these missions are, but I'll spoiler them for those that want to try and figure them out by themselves. Cloak & Dagger: Once you make it to your MCV you basically just deploy it right in the base and begin to capture GDI buildings, base creep turrets, strategically sell off buildings and build tanks until you win. I think that one of the strategy guides back in the day basically straight up said that you should use the sandbag exploit to block incoming enemy units as a legitimate way to beat the mission? It would be goofy if Westwood actually developed the mission with that exploit strategy in mind. Under Siege: Take a stealth tank to the bottom center of the map and destroy a church to uncover a crate with credits in it. Take your stealth tank and then blow open a small portion of wall at the GDI base in the NW and then Engineer rush the base with your APC. Capture, base creep, and build tanks until you win. Nod Death Squad: Take your two stealth tanks to the far right end of the map and go north until you reach where the cliff and GDI base walls converge. Begin attacking the wall corner until you have just enough room to squeeze your stealth tanks into the NE corner of the base, but allow time for your tanks to go in and out of stealth while you do this so they don't draw too much attention. By this time all of the units in the GDI base should be mobile and heading towards the remaining units you left behind, wherever they are. Move your stealth tanks near the Advanced Comm. Center so that they're just out of range of the lone AGT. Win game. There may be other ways to beat these missions, but the ones I posted seem to be the most efficient and least time consuming ones there are. The long lost cousin of the Westwood/Petroglyph RTS stable is Universe at War: Earth Assault. I remember having a ton of fun playing that game but it got hosed over by Microsoft as it was a Games For Windows Live release. I don't think you can even buy it anywhere anymore.

UAW had its problems but it was legit one of the most unique RTS I've played, One faction could switch its entire army from light to dark, another's bases were gigantic, customizable murderbots.

My favorite obscure RTS back in the day was War Inc. It was very much a C&C clone but it had some unique takes on the formula as money carried over between missions, so you could do lots of things like design cheaper or more expensive variants of all your units and invest spare cash in the stock market on the side.

Welp finally beat the GDI campaign for the first time...ever! Woo! Also got the Death From Above achievement. Game's dicking me out of the getting the "Kane laughs at the orbital strike" ending though: every time I use the Ion Cannon to finish off the temple infantry pop out, and when infantry pop out the Temple's no longer the last Nod unit/building destroyed. Not sure if I was helped more by Spookydonut's breakdowns of the map or by Nod's harvester AI breaking...multiple times. They'd just sit there so I'd go out of my way to ignore them if they weren't filling up Nod's coffers. Every now and then something would get them moving and then they'd stop soon afterwards. Eventually just dropped them with Orcas, and by that point I'd taken out both ConYardss (you can't rebuild them in the same spot if I capture your hidden one in the village, fuckers!) so the AI was just hosed.

Playing though RA Soviet campaign and came across an odd little glitch that benefitted me in mission 5, the one where you have to secure the island. I build a sub pen knowing it’ll trigger the Allied MCV to enter the transport and head to the island. Except... it never does. It does that spin-in-place thing like it’s stuck. So I just save it at that point and figure I’ll just take advantage by stacking up paratroopers at the north beachhead. It’s still stuck, so I’m able to amass tanks and wipe it out and the base while it’s still on the north shore. I capture the dome, clear out the rest of the map and mission accomplished. I reload to that saved point out of curiosity, but now the MCV immediately moves freely and heads to the island like it’s supposed to. Strange.

Those are just my observations though. I could be wrong. Modern games definitely have gotten better at: if the AI can do something you can too (and vice versa) and constrain luck as a factor in the outcome, though that last part is inherently hard to do in a clickety-click RTS. There's also the thing about adding cool features/units that aren't integrated into the game well and end up being pointless which perhaps isn't as much a function of old school. I seem to recall Total Annihilation and its spiritual successor Supreme Commander - in spite of becoming total clusterfuck engagements - you'd still find a situational use for those peewees and tier 1 units... in multiplayer nonetheless. (Rushing is a valid strategy but not the only strategy when the unit count on both sides approaches laughable.) I totally agree that when Tiberium Dawn/Red Alert are being challenging, they are also unfair. In such a way that the dissonance of the "AI" playing by different rules is too obvious. In other words; the stacking of the deck isn't elegantly done. I totally get why people hate that, I did too in my youth. Now I'm just an old man enjoying it for what it is - nostalgia

Ran into a new bug in Soviet Mission 12, suddenly the shadow expanded on the entire map and all my Mammoths stopped doing any damage. Could still run over infantry but hitting anything did no damage no matter what. Reloading an earlier save didnt help.

"Who will be the new king of the RTS?!" on the cover, that sort of thing. TA, of course, completely flattened it and everybody quickly forgot about Dark Reign. But then these days TA is itself practically a footnote. I definitely preferred Dark Reign as a kid, for the moodier atmosphere and the more eclectic unit designs. It did a lot of stuff that was really advanced for the time period, too- waypoints, patrolling, unit dispositions, activated unit abilities, different movement and terrain types. The sequel I don't remember so well but I suspect it sucked rear end.

The thing is TA still works on modern machines, the resolution scales well (even though it's literally just zooming out) and it has more command features compared to a lot of modern era RTS' being able to have planes automatically come out and patrol is great, or patrolling construction units will repair things. I want to install it on steam again

Fishbus posted:The thing is TA still works on modern machines, the resolution scales well (even though it's literally just zooming out) and it has more command features compared to a lot of modern era RTS' I had to install a separate .dll for it to work properly, but the unofficial patch adds even more functionality, like a megamap, better pathfinding, and a bunch of useful control stuff like double-click select and the ability to drag-construct buildings. Though I don't actually like how the game itself plays, TA Spring had even better features. Chief among them was the way you could have your constructors automatically build mexes in a defined area.

I've always had a soft spot for Warzone 2100, the functionality late game with being able to add planes and artillery to detection points so they would defend if any enemy entered in to its range was phenomenal for its time.

Its campaign structure was cool too, you basically built and defended your base on a single persistent map and sent out armies to complete missions on seperate ones. I think you could switch between the two at will?

Also the persistent map would get bigger throughout the campaign. Very similar in parts to Earth 2150 in that vein.
