Has anyone used 16" wheels on their NB (or NA I suppose)? Do they look too large IRL? From some of the photos I could find online, it seems like they might be, but I just had these pop up on a local craigslist thing for cheap and I kind of want them.

My NA has 14"s it.. holy poo poo at this

I guess that's different because I don't think NBs ever came with 14" and OTOH, had 16" on some special editions and those look pretty good IMO:

Some of the aftermarket stuff a lot less so, but I think it could work. I couldn't find any photos with a set of 16" Pro Race rims and it's pretty difficult to tell without trying them first.

Yeah - I think some NB2s came with 16x6.5s. 15s are popular because they're lighter and they give you a greater choice of tires. For 16x7 you're probably going to want 205/45 tires.

These are NBs with 15s:

Here's some NBs on 16s:

How's the stock suspension on the ND? Dogshit out of the box like the NC?

I saw a Strato Blue NB today. Somehow I had never seen that color in person or even heard of it. Really good looking color.

You'll want some sway's for sure, have fun changing the front. Club model bilstiens are good but swap the springs.

I thought that the base ND handled pretty well. Improvement over the base NC at least. But yeah - they'd benefit from stiffer swaybars.

So the stock Brembos on the ND2 are trash. I have Porterfield R4S pads in them and even if I stand on the brakes I can't get ABS to activate half time time. I want to upgrade to something more powerful that won't possibly kill me in the canyons.

What do you guys think about the Flyin' Miata little big brake kit and big brake kits? Is the big brake kit overkill for the street?

fine, soft. i'm not a huge fan of of the high pressure bilsteins, but they're compliant. i didn't like the OTS koni yellows i put on the car. for reference, every NC i've driven stock seems fine and passes the sniff test; it's a miata, it's going to be sprung softly and ride on the bumpstops.

the alignment out of the box might be hot trash, but the car rolls and is compliant. you can easily point the car into a corner and powerslide out of it due to the rear geometry and 120 ft-lbs of torque being available at 2k as long as you're not on extremely sticky summer tires. the car's handling is dramatically changed by tire choice alone, the OE tires have good steering feel and just enough grip to make things stick or slide depending on your inputs.

did you change the brake fluid? apparently a lot of people have had a bunch of air in the lines.

re: abs, it only engages based off of high initial brake pressure in my experience. a surefire way to never have the abs fire off is to slow roll and try to build brake pressure throughout the throw of the pedal. idk what the mechanism is exactly, but it can feel inconsistent.

also, take it to the track if you're so concerned about 4 pot calipers on an 11" rotor not being sufficient to slow down a 2300lb car on the street.

FM big brakes are overkill unless you're making 250+ hp and tracking the car, IMO.

I just had the brakes bled it seemed to help a bit but not fix the issue completely. I'm coming from a BRZ which felt like it had much stronger brakes than this car.

The issue I'm running into is that the brakes feel fine for moderate breaking pressure. But there have been a few times where I'm going a bit too fast downhill and I stand on the brakes, I figure it would lock up the wheels and engage abs, but instead nothing locks up and I just feel like I'm not stopping fast enough. I'm not trying to engage ABS at every corner but I just don't feel confident in how fast I'm able to stop the car in an emergency. Maybe it's just the stock tires not gripping? I know the cars only 2300 pounds but shouldn't I be able to threshold brake/lock up the tires at will just by standing on the brakes?

why are you basing how much you are stopping on whether or not ABS kicks in

Partial Octopus

I'm just trying to put into words what I'm noticing when I'm braking. Is it normal to not have enough braking force to lock up tires? I'm not a track driver and I haven't driven a ton of different cars.

go find an empty road with no people behind you, get up to 50-60 mph and emergency brake like you usually would. see if ABS engages and make a note about how long it took you to stop (or use a landmark such as a sign on the road).

then get back up to 50-60 mph and kick the pedal to the floor. no hovering, no rolling on it. kick it, actually stand on it. did ABS engage? was the braking distance shorter than before?

e: from the sounds of it, you took it to a shop. did the crack both bleeders on the calipers and run fluid through both sides?

Russian Bear posted:

if you try to trigger the ABS by taking your time to push the pedal to the floor, it won't engage. like i mentioned earlier, i don't know exactly what's going on but you can get way more brake pressure out of the booster/MC/whatever if you get on the brake pedal extremely hard and extremely fast.

I did one parking lot stop, from maybe 40 to 0, during an ND test drive. ABS did not engage but the car stopped plenty quick for me. A bit faster than my NC running stock brakes w/ Stoptech rotors/pads. If anything, it tells me that the ND has a better braking setup. I mean, I've jumped on the brakes in an M5 at highway speed and failed to trigger ABS - didn't mean there was anything wrong with it. And that was a heavy loving car.

I've been able to engage the ABS in my ND with standard brakes while trying to deglaze. I found that it was somewhat subtle/gentle. I had a R56 Mini where ABS engaging was a violent affair in comparison.

Echoing what others have said, I have ND Brembos, factory pads, with 200TW tires. I can get the abs to activate if I suddenly stand on the brake but if it’s a slow engagement abs rarely activates even with more and more pressure. I think it brakes well but I’m sticking to 7/10 on the canyons. I’m certainly due for a flush, bleed and have some r4s pads waiting to install, excited to see how that will change things.

TrueChaos

NAs & NBs have trash brakes from a feel perspective, but they stop perfectly well. I can get the abs to kick in with hard panick braking, but even on track I only really wind up in the abs at the end of the long straight. That might have more to do with the 245 width 200TW tires though. :v:

I did another bleed and it actually made a pretty significant difference. The brakes feel much better now. ABS is also working fine. It's definitely way more subtle in the ND than it was in other cars I've driven.

Took the '08 NC in to a local guy who turns stuff into track day cars for the BMW clubs because apparently he's autocross jesus in this area. We discussed the suspension refresh, went over the list of stuff to order. One thing he mentioned is that it would be cheaper to replace the control arms than to have him press in new bushings to the existing (and one of them took a hit from a curb or something compliments of the PO - not bent, but gouged). Should I just order AC Delco/whatever is cheap for lower control arms or is there a benefit to something better? I don't need to drop a ton on tubular stuff, I know that, and I assume we can dial in a mild negative camber front/rear with basic replacements.

e: and I'm probably going w/ FM's Koni Stage 2 package unless someone has a recommendation?

Ordered the Stage 2 kit plus some bushings and bumpstops and swaybar links and stuff.

What's a reasonably priced yet not dumb option for lowering the NC slightly? I have an '07 PRHT and love it in every way, but I wouldn't mind losing the ginormous wheel gap. Not going to track or autoX it, but would like it maybe 20mm lower. All original suspension with around 60k miles.

FreelanceSocialist

Replace the Shocks and Springs w/ the FM Stage 1 setup? That's what I'm doing. It appears that it will lower an NC PRHT almost an inch all around and will still be comfortable on the street.

It’s crazy how big the ND looks in comparison. Modern cars are so big. If you ever see an air-cooled 911, especially long hoods, next to a modern one it’s pretty shocking. I get a lot of that is safety and convenience but still.

The R360 is also a kei car though so it's like comparing with an 3 series with an Isetta. But the 356s and early 911s are hilariously tiny yeah.

The ND is like 2” wider than an NA and 1” shorter; if the Fiat 500 or Smart cars were still on sale, the ND would be the 3rd or 4th smallest car in the US market. The ND is tiny.

The R360 is a car where your legs are the crumple zone.

155.5” vs 154.1” length
65.9” vs 68.1” width
48.4” vs 48.6” height

I know the ND is small, which is why it’s so wild that is looks big in comparison. Maybe my post was poorly phrased. It is more two thoughts, not that the ND is big, modern car. Like yeah that R360 a kei car, so anything looks big, but imagine an Accord parked next to that thing.
