since they've never mentioned its existence in marketing (and very pointedly say *online* multiplayer in the new trailer too) the only real conclusion to draw is that it doesn't have any.

I think steam prevents any transaction where it's costing you negative money from going through, so you wouldn't actually get the money. Or the game.

and this is NISA? what happened to them? i guess the biggest game of theirs to me is Disgaea 1, and that had a fantastic translation. did the company change hands or something?

I think there was a goon here a long time ago that worked at NISA and they mentioned a good portion of the team was really creepy and worked on different projects than main line Disgaea, like the Neptunia games. I think most of those people moved on to Idea Factory International who continued to embrace meme translations. I don't know what happened to them now but their translations really depends on the game. Disgaea 5 was fine, and so was Cold Steel 3. Everything else ranged from cringe to outright unreadable (pre-patch Ys 8)

Exactly that, yeah. But I don't want to let them bait me into spending more than I originally planned to, so I'm looking for things that cost between precisely $4.55 and $7.55.

Hey RPG thread, I recently brought Ys 8 for Switch on a whim. I'm 3 dungeons in and i've been really enjoying it, enough that i'm actually pretty disappointed in myself that despite Ys being a long running and decently popular series in a genre I like I don't know anything about it.

I'm thinking i'll play through the rest of the series once i'm done with Ys 8 and is there any recommendation for where I should start? I can see a bunch of games got rereleased for PS4 or put on Steam, but what's considered the best of the series?

Of the 'party' type Ys, 8 is probably the best but 7 and Celceta are real fun too. The mid-group..a lot of people will say Origins, but I like Oath in Felghana a lot more. Ark of Napishtim isn't bad, but it's the lesser of the three (and the first of that style). 1 & 2 are their own thing and pretty dated but I still think they're fun. Hard to say where you should start, though, probably just whichever catches your fancy.

Honestly you can't go wrong with any of them, though if you start with 1&2 collection they have a weird bump combat system that some people dont get on with, I still find them fun though.

Oath has more varied environments, as origins is entirely inside a tower so it's basically lost anything "outside" as a possibility, but I remember Origins being a bit smoother to control, especially if you were trying to cast magic. As such if you're gonna play both, do Oath first, unlike me.

I was thinking of playing Memories of Celceta next but now i'm wondering if I should try one of the games that has a completely different style of play. Sounds like it could be a nice change of pace before going back to the party system.

I should also have asked which game has the best soundtrack since I think one of the main reasons i'm loving Ys 8 is that Sunshine Coast has been playing on loop in my head for the past few days. Although the one thing I knew about Ys before I brought the game was that the series is supposed to have excellent music so i'm sure they're all good in that department.

NISA have been running extremely lean since at least Disagaea 5 from my understanding.

The Japanese side of the company NIS was on the brink of insolvency a few years back but is holding on almost solely due to NISA. The games they actually develop have never sold well except Disgaea and losing Idea Factory and GUST put them in dire straits.

XSEED are in similar trouble after losing the Falcom titles and the Senran Kagura fanbase boycotting them over Sony censorship. Their Marvelous titles are doing well though so I doubt they're going under.

Yeah, you can actually explore the whole octopath map from the beginning to get some good loot, the only issue is not wiping to the random encounters.

Combining the scholar reduced encounters with the fact save points reset random encounters means you can get to places like Grandport way early.

It's a Disgaea game so it has weirdness in both the TL and the source materla. Just play it, it's great and I enjoyed playing through and breaking the game over my knee* on the Switch.

Since it has all the DLC, you can grab characters from D1-4 almost immediately too. You don't need those characters, but why wouldn't you want Desco? Some of the units have Evilities that are pretty bonkers once you start setting up squads and building for specific purposes. Grinding out character stats isn't too bad. It's probably better than in D4 but I abused the shop dupe glitch (before it was patched) after wasting too many loving hours on PPS dupe bullshit in 3.

And if you have Therion in your group (plus luck and/or patience), well... yeah GG.

There's also a very good glaive right outside of one of the towns in the forest of no return (I think) that isn't too bad to run to even without the reduced encounter passive, but it helps. With the passive and patience you can definitely dive some lvl 45+ areas to grab chests with ch4-grade gear pretty quickly.

except its not jsut a specific developer, its many developers and manga and anime studios, loli stuff is pervasive. I don't think it's stretch to say that japanese society at large has a serious issue with that, and using "japan" as shorthand for "japanese society" is not an uncommon idiom.
