Trump has proven he can kind of do whatever he wants and get away with it, I'm sure if he really wanted to get rid of them, he could do it. But I think he doesn't REALLY want to, as having a "villain" to get his fan base angry about is how he gets tons of support. He's also taken a lot of time to craft a distrust in media in general with "fake news" to get people to listen to him and only him, and having CNN etc are a key to that narrative.
