Carnival is supposedly selling 6 of their older ships as well. Rumor is the old Fantasy class machines are being sold or scrapped.

And now Royal Caribbean has halted operations through Sept 15, with the exceptions of some China sailings and the 2020 Bermuda season (Grandeur of the Seas and Adventure of the Seas), which is suspended until October 31.

I always wanted to try out the Seaside. Back before the Covid chaos they had some decent deals for solos. Being in Port Canaveral does make it much more convenient for me.

I want to correct myself, apparently Hurtigruten is cruising around Norway (only carrying Norwegians) as well.

Two of the most popular nerd cruises, Star Trek and JoCoCruise have both had their early 2021 dates cancelled.

Don't blame them at all. There's no way I'm getting on a boat next March if there's not a widely-administered vaccine by then, which seems unlikely.

Yeah it seems like cruising is going to be done for a while.

But I have found reading the Cruise Critic forums amusing for their insanity. Sure plenty of people are realists but there are also lots who think the cruises lines should just start sailing again with no changes.

Or even just ignore the CDC because cruise ships are just a scapegoat and not a serious concern for virus spread: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2755987-ignoring-cdc-cruise-regulations/

quote:

We all know cruise ships have been a target by the health organizations and kind of a scapegoat for the pandemic.
The CDC seems like they don't want cruise ships to continue and have not really cooperated with the cruise lines to restart. Until RCL and NCL came up with a panel to help restart cruising, the CDC made no attempt to help them out. The proposal they said will come out by end of August, but how long will it take for the CDC to review and go over with the cruiselines what they approve. This will probably take months, well after the hoping for the Oct 1 start.
Also the CDCs regulations of not allowing crew to use commercial flights to get home was ridiculous. These crew members were quarantined for months on the ship with no cases and were tested, yet they had to take private charter flights to go home and then quarantined for another 14 days at a hotel their government had to host them in before they could return to their families. Also the CDC imposed jail time and fines for the cruise lines CEOs and upper management if the crew members were not repatriated the way they said. Pretty extreme guidelines that other industries didn't have to follow.

I know this is a long shot but my question is: if the CDC doesn't show any effort in helping the cruise lines and basically the US government just says cruise at your own risk, would you ignore the CDC regulations and cruise?

I personally would cruise with all precautions that the cruise lines has mandated.

I just got an email from RCCL about their new Muster 2.0 program. Instead of having the one muster drill that everyone has to attend, you can go to your assigned muster station anytime before the ship sails and check in with the crew member there. They will give you all the muster instructions personally and then you can be on your way. The point of it is to avoid crowding so many people into a tight space, obviously. I know this will be a headache for the crew, but this sounds so amazing! I hate the muster drill and just being able to go and get it out of the way sounds so nice. I hope all cruise lines start doing it this way from now on.

Yep, JoCo head office sent out an email the other day, saying the 2021 cruise is being moved to 2022. Everyone who was already booked for 2021 gets to keep their booking or turn it into a credit for the 2023 cruise. And the next deposit isn't due until March 2021 now, which gives everyone way more time to pay for their bookings.

I wish I'd known that was going to happen before I cancelled my booking last month. I probably won't be able to get that room type ever again.

Oh well, other things are a lot more important.

Hubster was on a Princess Cruises call today... one new bad thing, full refunds on cruises now have to be done by 180 days, and not 90 days like it used to be.

Also, virtual musters, etc.

They're going to be reopening bookings, once they've dealt with all the cancelations and credits, plus doing some site maintenance. So I wouldn't give up on being able to rebook if you want to do 2022? There's a long time between now and when the sailing is.

But you're right that there's more important things, so I also wouldn't stress about it. A lot of people are likely going to miss the 2022 cruise, after all.

It was fine. I was actually talking with SB about it trying to remember literally anything about that ship and I just can't. It was basically the same as any other Carnival ship I've been on in the past 5 years. Like, they're literally all the same.

Shortly after that sister ship Sovereign of the seas was also beach right next to it, both are being sold for scrap.

Sovereign was the first modern mega cruise ship built by Royal Caribbean and set off the crazy ship size race.

They have one of these types of ships left, Majesty of the Seas.

But the fact they are scrapping big ships like this shows how badly they are hurting for cash.

It certainly says something about the industry as a whole, when a ship gets scrapped, rather than being sold on to one of the smaller companies. Or the old shell game of moving the ship between subsidiaries, like royal princess / artemis.

Great idea.

We'll shut down all cruises when the U.S. has ~3000 daily infections, and start 'em back up when the daily rate is up to 78,000.

Which feels wild to hear, but in these circumstances, they have to be. Cruises live and die by reputation, while the CDC is hamstrung and being sabotaged by the Trump administration.

Apparently they were all maskless for the first few days of the voyage, too, which isn't surprising.

I am disappointed that any lines are trying to sail without a vaccine available yet, though.
