galenanorth posted:Does this thread have any documentaries or videos to recommend regarding Latin American history and politics There's a documentary on Netflix about the history of Cuba. It interviews both American and European historians as well as Cuban historians. It was pretty good, from my memory of it, especially if you ignore the American historians when their version of events conflicts with the Cuban historians.

The Battle of Chile is great in terms of the ins and outs of the Chilean coup. Las Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo and the Search for Identity is one of two videos I have every watched that made me cry (the other being the finale for the Americans) The two Che films by Soderbergh are pretty historically accurate. War on Democracy covers some of the coups in the region. The Revolution Will Not Be Televised is also good.

Plutonis posted:Musk is a piece of poo poo but I really don't think he was that much of an influence in Bolivia considering how low are lithium exports are even after the coup. (He did had some dealings with El Chapo though 👁️) Bolivia has huge lithium reserves but underdeveloped extractive capacity. IIRC pre-coup the Morales government cancelled a deal with a German company and arranged for financial and infrastructure support from China. I think this was literally a couple months before Morales fled, so make of that timing what you will.

IIRC, the Morales government wasn't doing much with their lithium deposits because their government was doing just fine and they knew it would be an environmental catastrophe to mine it at an impactful level

Fast Luck posted:Cuba Libre? I heard it sucks once it gets to the Fidel era, and from that point on the talking heads are all literally CIA or Miami exiles, but you can rent Fidel: The Untold Story on Amazon Prime. I always thought a good trick'd be to interview a bunch of the politico ghouls in Miami, get em to say all kinds of nasty poo poo about Fidel and Cuba, and then the actual doc is on the family connections of each individual to Batista and/or some kind of latifundio.
