This is a great read looking at how comedy was subsumed into the establishment, and how the existence ofJontry Crobynin revealed this through our endless succession of panel show's complete inability to offer any actual funny jokes.

Nah we're at the point where the rich and powerful are so cartoonishly evil that you can't even be mad at anything specific because it's like choosing one drop of water to cry foul at during a tsunami.

There's an occasional meme on the Alt history forums of having Karl Rove be someone who advocates in this manner, like in that old one about hell invading Earth he suggests not bothering to respond to the ongoing attack on uhhh Chicago? Detroit? Because it's a blue city so wiping it out will benefit the Republicans. Bush et al are horrified by this suggestion but these days I'm thinking that's the least believable part of the whole thing.

Can't get no luck.

I get that some people don't like seeing a page of tweets ITT but twitter is just where things happen now. Government policy gets tweeted out, journos have a direct line to people through it for things which might not otherwise get a whole story of their own, politicians etc. can speak to people when again they would otherwise have to rely on the press, the POTUS has a stream-of-consciousness feed on there...

Also just the fact that quite often right now there's a misleading news story or outright propaganda and somebody with the inside track will tell us what it really means or what's really going on, via twitter.

Also... like what do you want? Would you prefer links to news sites? They're all propaganda fronts at this point. Twitter also auto-embeds so you don't have to go off the forums typically to read what's being talked about.

Yeah we probably don't need constant posting of ThomasPaine's girlfriend but the fact of the matter is a lot of the time we either share a tweet or we would just copy a tweet without linking it.

Plus there are a lot of idiots on there and it's funny and good for morale to laugh at them

On the last point you’re positioning that it’s a good thing that typically posters here only read the tweeted headline or single screenshotted sentence out of an article, rather than clicking through to read the whole thing.
I’m going to disagree and today that’s terrible for the forums’ discourse and leads to a lot of nonsense being posted.

Likelihood of a national lockdown is I think close to 0. I just don’t think there is the political will. The government seems more willing to do localised lockdowns though - although how they’re going to work as the furlough scheme is reduced/removed is unclear.

Trying to think about what would have happened if Corbyn had been forced to resign after 2017 and Labour, under the control of a right-wing figurehead like, say, Chuka Umunna, had successfully pushed for that second referendum. Now, obviously, it would have essentially been a carbon copy of the first one, but what would have happened after that? Would Labour have automatically become anti-EU and voted through May's attempts at deals? Would we still be living through the May premiership today?

Idk, counterfactuals can be a bit silly.

Marmaduke!
May 19, 2009

Why would it do that!?
Am interesting "what if"... Labour would have probably done worse in the 2017 elections, so possibly May would have stayed on, we'd have been in a slightly better position on Brexit (still terrible), Boris and Don Cummies wouldn't be running the show, less of a majority... but I think functionally things wouldn't be much different. I don't think May would have infected herself with covid either!

So basically JC's worst act as LOTO was doing too well in 2017.

May only resigned because there was nothing further she could do about Brexit so yes she'd still be in charge, probably still allied with the DUP and under attack from the press for whatever soft Brexit she had been forced into to keep the DUP onboard. This would be sustainable because Melt Labour would also be supporting the Brexit deal and so the xenophobes would be marshalled behind a Brexit Party again but without being given the same clear support they had before from the media as elections wouldn't be looming and there wasn't the hated left in power in Labour to contrast and attack.

Coronavirus response might actually be worse though because austerity in name and deed would still be on the cards so I wouldn't have expected such high furlough support or grants for businesses going out. I think in your situation we'd actually be much closer to the USA situation than now.

It's an inherent drive of capitalism to limit the working classes existence to moments in time where you are either having your labour value extracted from you or are realising the capitalists profits so the 'you can only socialise with friends if there's a card machine in the same room' joke is not far off.

Can we put this in the OP or something? That format is the generic one that Twitter has imposed for at least 5 years now, and it's indicative of nothing more than a new user who's not particularly au fait with Twitter (or internet culture generally). Any self-respecting bot-farmer would be disgusted to find out people believe they'd use such an easily-rumbled format - if anything that format is *less* likely to be a bot for that exact reason.

It's worth knowing that even in a trans exclusive sense (which is wrong, but terves gonna terf) she's still very wrong and since modern medical imagining has come in we're discovering that things like persistent Müllerian duct syndrome are more common than once thought (it was only previously known through cases of severe cryptorchidism or during exploratory surgery or autopsy).
