On a slightly lighter note, I was explaining that explosion to a co-worker and when I said it was likely ammonium nitrate, she said "is that like amyl nitrite? I used to huff that poo poo."

Nitrate wouldn't just go up on its own, at least not like that - it'd need some sort of fuel

zegermans posted:Nitrate wouldn't just go up on its own, at least not like that - it'd need some sort of fuel Can ammonium nitrate form a dust cloud? If so, a single spark could make it go boom. Would also need the Big ol’ pile o fertilizer to be agitated to form a dust cloud of course. Moving it perhaps. Or some other combustible particulate in the near vicinity. E: the Guardian says about 80% of the country’s grain goes through that port. The entire place is potentially filled with combustible particulate clouds. So spark hits cloud of grain dust, it combusts and x tons of fertilizer dynamite nearby explode Fruits of the sea fucked around with this message at 22:43 on Aug 4, 2020 |

twitter side bar is way topical i thought that was a hotel next to the blast, its silos. and theyre still standing. i thought they got exploded when i saw the video, the blast just wraps around them and completely distorts vision im seeing a lot of nanny cam vids of people going to help their kids, or in one case, a nanny going to protect her employers kid. no deaths in the vids but still, you have no idea whats going on in that moment

zegermans posted:Nitrate wouldn't just go up on its own, at least not like that - it'd need some sort of fuel I thought that, too, when the first reports said sodium nitrate. That stuff won't explode, it needs a fuel. Later it was said to be ammonium nitrate, which will indeed explode. The ammonium ion acts as a fuel.

Leaving kilotons of poorly-stored explosives in a warehouse for years because of red tape and bureaucratic inertia is a terrifyingly plausible OSHA story. I can only imagine the cycle of "somebody else's problem" passing the buck around because it would be a pain in the rear end to actually transport or dispose of it properly.

Apparently that port is where most of the grain consumed by Lebanon comes in. They're already having food security issues. This is going to be an absolute disaster beyond the initial blast.

We were talking about this and my dad told us about the time he was working at a chemical plant and the conveyor to the ammonium nitrate storage was on fire and if it had made it in there, it would have blown up half the town.

The Glumslinger posted:If that 2,700 tons figure is correct its about 3x the size of the Texas City explosion and 10x the size of the West, Texas explosion Texas city had less fertilizer but was a bigger and more devastating explosion because the ship acted as a pressure vessel and was filled with explosive gas thanks to the misguided firefighting tactics of the ship’s captain. They’re lucky the warehouse full of poo poo here was basically an empty box open to the atmosphere.

Since Trump has the mind of a child I imagine his eyes glazed over and he stopped listening to all the boring explanations about grain silos and chemicals he couldn't pronounce. He was hoping it was war, because that's more exciting, so he asks "Is it possible this was an attack? Like a bomb?" "Well it's not impossible so I suppose there's a small chance this could be some kind of attack, yes." "I knew it, they love bombs in Libya." "Beirut is in Lebanon, sir." "That's what I said, Lebyanon."
