is there a reason the shotgun takes several knockdowns to kill a zombie? am I doing something wrong

When you see zombies coming, crouch down and look up a bit. When the zombie starts to try to axe you, give 'em both barrels. As noted, zombies have a chance to get back up unless you decapitate them or gib them first, or use the tommy gun.

As far as Doom '16 adding more complexity, it's like playing with one of those mods for classic Doom that add things like altfires and shops where you can upgrade weapons and the like. It's there, if you care about that kind of thing. You get two mods max per weapon, so juggling them takes a bit getting used to, but if you want to focus on the primary fire you're perfectly free to do that. The mods are mostly "handy in a pinch" kind of stuff, but not really necessary in the larger scheme of things.

Now Eternal is a different story because they expect you to use everything to get the most mileage out of your weapons. There's like one mod that you're pretty much required to get for each weapon it seems like, like the sticky bombs for the shotgun and the scope for the heavy rifle because they're great to use against weak points, and you need to hit those weak points to reduce the enemy's threat level. Basically anything that lets you do more burst damage at a time is pretty much a necessity.

suppose i oughta buy Doom 64 on Switch even though i never beat the version i got with Eternal on PS4. gotta complete that collection (and i'll be more likely to actually finish it if i can just play a level here or there and then put the system down rather than having to be planted in front of the telly like on PS4)

I recommend it. It plays really well on Switch and the HD rumble and gyro are nice little bonuses. No brainer at $2.50.

Yes. Give it a little time because the first few levels are kinda rear end, once you get the rocket launcher it starts to pick up.

yeah, i played the studio's version of Turok for a bit and while i kind of bounced off the game (think i got fed up with respawning enemies at one point or something) the actual port was really good so i'm sure Doom 64 will be great on Switch as well

To be fair, if you were like me, you didn't quite know what you were going to get when you went into Half-Life for the first time. Like in retrospect, we've got Barney, a pet headcrab, and friendly Vortigaunts...but going into it, you had these gruesome zombies with flayed chests and limited ammunition and you had to reload and Resident Evil 2 had come out earlier in the year and it had those things, too!

Secondary fire with both barrels at close range will nearly always kill one. I wouldn't use a single shotgun blast unless you're dealing with a bunch of enemies at once and need to buy yourself a little time, and that's never the best option. Flares and TNT are the best lower-level options for zombies; the big guns are usually a waste of harder to find ammo unless you're taking out a bunch at once. The Pitchfork Poke is fine for individual zombies once you've gotten the hang of darting forward and back and timing your attacks.

You have to tweak the thing a bit to get it running good on modern systems. Be sure to get the 227 patch and the DX10 renderer.

It can be quite sparse in some places but those wide empty areas were amazing 22 years ago. The gameplay suffers a bit from not having an FU gun with limited ammo that can reliably just end enemies; dancing around with all of them juggling a bunch of weapons can get a bit tedious. It feels a bit rock-paper-scissors at times, where going into a situation with the wrong gun selected will lead to a quick death.

There’s this Unreal Evolution gameplay tweak mod that came out earlier this year. It might not be the best for a first-time playthrough but most of the changes are pretty subtle. The biggest change is a weapon upgrade system, but I felt I ended up with really powerful versions of the guns I like but even shittier versions of the guns I don’t (all the guns start out worse than base Unreal).

I have enormous amounts of nostalgia for Unreal so it’s impossible for me to judge it objectively. Unreal running on a Voodoo 2 might have been the first time I personally saw a PC game that looked better than contemporary consoles.

It's more than a gorgeous-for-1998 tech demo, but it's a little unrefined. The art direction holds up, it's one of the first FPSes where colored lighting was really important for setting atmosphere and mood, and the first time through stands out both for its use of scripting and for the fact that variability of enemy behavior and attack patterns was actually a thing. On the down side, there are parts of the game with huge, garishly lit rooms and not a lot else happening in them, and what story there is trails off about halfway through, then gets a headslapper of tacked on irony for an ending. But I'd be a liar if I said parts of it don't excite me even now, and it builds an atmosphere that isn't quite like anything else. Also props for its MOD soundtrack, which was a headturner at the time and still gives it a certain style and ambiance today.
