Experiencing Prey (2006) for the first time, and I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't Art Bell.

Loving the way the level design fucks around with space and the cool weapon set. Not loving the full-on headfirst dive into magical Native American tropes or graphic child murder.

For a game that started development around the same time as Duke Nukem Forever someone made the right call to actually get Native actors.

I don't remember the child murder though I haven't gotten past the first few sections in my replay. The ending is sad, just a kick in the nuts.

e: Also hilarious you can restart the murder machine and not turn it off again.

You know. Leather.
Isn't the child murder more implied via ghosts? Much better.

edit: I also remember the player character having tonal whiplash after mourning his grandfather getting brutally murdered and then making a wisecrack 30 seconds later.

also AMID EVIL's weapons should be much more fun than they actually are. the problem with magical weapons is you lose the meaty punch of conventional weaponry, but that can be mitigated if the magical weapons are fun in other ways... and I feel like the impaling one was the only fun one because of how enemies just fly off into walls and splat super fast. (maybe the enemies soaking up too much damage was another issue, made the lightning trident or w/e not as fun because you have to work at it to get a chain to go off)

You did ask for a classic arena shooter, and I personally feel the hero shooter aspects of Quake Champions disqualifies it from being an arena game done specifically in a classic way. It's surely a modernization of Quake, and not a bad one either, that I actually like to play and watch sometimes.

But yeah for scratching the purely classic arena itch, I'm looking forward to Diabotical.

Got all the champions. I do like it and think it’s good for a noob like me. I did just get a Diabotical key so I’m looking forward to trying that tomorrow as well.

This is how I’ve always felt about stuff like Heretic, Hexen, Ziggurat, etc.: Conventional firearms just feel better to me than magic staffs and wands. AMID EVIL’s mace actually feels quite good, but the rest of the arsenal doesn’t quite do it for me.

An FPS that recently came out called ELDERBORN actually did medieval fantasy combat quite well, but it was with swords and spears and hammers.

I’d even extend that to laser guns and the like: I’ve found a lot more satisfaction in Halo’s sniper rifle than the beam rifle, and the DMR and shotgun feel a little better to me than their energy analogs. That being said, Halo still does an admirable job with the animations: the way the energy weapons heat up and burn the hand, or tremble when they’re fully charged, or the way the energy carbine ejects an expended canister and gets reloaded—they help capture a physical “feel” that I appreciate.

I don't know how I feel about Dusk's weapons. Like almost every shooter the pistol becomes pointless, the double shotguns are great workhorses which makes the double barrel kind of disappointment in comparison, the assault rifle is okay but I'll still take double shotguns, hunting rifle is great to one-shot those annoying homing cultists or fireball guys, and the mortar feels under powered compared to the riveter which the game gives you a lot of ammo for but I guess it's nice banking shots around corners? I almost forgot about the crossbow, I have no idea what purpose it's supposed to serve.

Like the guns in Dusk are serviceable by nature of the game's design but weapon selection feels closer to Quake 2 than Blood or other shooters of the post-Doom era.

What are you playing on so I can measure epeens?

After discovering crouching turns cultists into the Police Squad/Naked Gun shootout scene, I'm thinking of sticking with my normal difficulty + extra crispy enemy count.

Why don't you perform zazen, facing a wall?
Dusk's super shotgun is the third most damaging thing in the game behind the soap and the sword charge. Dual shotguns are good enough for trash but for serious enemies I really prefer the super shotgun. It's not underpowered like the Quake one. IIRC the cowgirls are the only regular enemy it can't two-shot.

Mortar/riveter is a trade off of versatility vs DPS.

The crossbow overpenetrates enemies and shoots through walls. it's usually the most ammo efficient way to cut through a crowd. you can also use it to fly

I don't know how range/reload factor into the super shotty's DPS but I try my hardest to be nowhere near enemies in Dusk least of all on cero miedo where the doctors and cow girls can practically one shot you with full morale, however morale is supposed to function. So yeah, double shottys is medium range weapon of choice mixed with riveter for mobs and rifle for sniping.

Soap is a one-hit kill.

Dusk has so many little things, like e2m1 being impossible for me at first until I realized the best weapon when overrun by ranged enemies are the scythes.

I've tried playing it a couple of times and bounced off of it, but still keep seeing praise from non-idiots so figure I should give it more of a chance.

For Metro 2033, survival mode. For the sequel Last Light, spartan mode.

I dno, I have fond memories of Hexen's magic weapons and I feel they had plenty good kickback for the majority of them.

It basically just boils down to 'art done well', as you can make rubrics until you are blue in the face but there's still no guarantee the weapon 'feels' right.

My main beef with blood despite it easily being my favorite build engine game is the balance is all over the place. Cultists probably do too much damage for how many of them there are and how quickly they react, and stone gargoyles and the giant spiders have way, way, WAY too much health. I have no idea what you'd do with them if the Tesla gun wasn't incredibly overpowered. The lifeleech also just feels kinda lovely but maybe that's just a fresh supply thing, but when I played it in a different port it still felt pretty underpowered.
