The walmart site is lovely but if you actually buy stuff sold by walmart you're probably safer than if you buy stuff sold by amazon because of amazon's crazy inventory commingling scheme (if you're buying stuff like SD cards). Walmart doesn't necessarily have the best inventory for electronics, though. It seemed like they were trying to improve that a year or two ago but then maybe gave up. Also, YMMV, but I've bought a bunch of things from aliexpress now and I've somehow never had anything literally not work. I'm not sure it's worse than random sellers on amazon. Recently I've bought several things from amazon that just simply weren't as described (earphones that were supposed to be noise cancelling but weren't, containers that were supposed to be microwave save but were labelled on the bottom as not microwave save), although I think this was just sloppiness and not intentional. One thing that seems to be good about aliexpress is that despite the bad English and stuff, sellers realize that it's just a huge waste of time/money for everyone if there's any confusion about products, so in a lot of cases they tend to go into extreme detail and err on the side of disclosing everything. For example, in the case of clothes a lot of sellers have huge red warnings saying "Chinese sizes" and then extremely specific instructions on measurements so there can be no possible confusion. mystes fucked around with this message at 19:10 on Aug 6, 2020 |

On the other hand you don't necessarily want to buy random, expensive electronics off aliexpress without reviews you trust from other sites. You can try looking to see if you can find better reviews elsewhere. Amazon has a similar product but it's a different color so who knows if it's actually the same thing or not: https://www.amazon.com/EverDrive-N8-Famicom-Nintendo-NES/dp/B079X342S4 Other sites also have positive reviews (https://gbatemp.net/review/everdrive-n8.167/) but again there's no way to be 100% sure you're actually getting the same thing rather than a clone. mystes fucked around with this message at 19:17 on Aug 6, 2020 |

Second time ever dealing with a refund and it was super easy and quick. With the pandemic I had a lot of sellers preemptively extend the purchase protection for orders back in March and April. Everything has been rolling in eventually except one package from 29th April. Protection ran out today and I checked the mostly useless tracking and all it said was “Shipment cancelled”. Full refund of AU$45 within an thirty minutes of opening the dispute. Advice on buying batteries from Ali? Is it just “don’t” or are there reputable vendors? Looking to replace some very old 18650s.

I don't have positive advice on batteries. I bought some button batteries that had Panasonic on the labels. They died incredibly quickly.

A small supplier can produce knock-off designer clothes, but not knock-off batteries.

I did a small price comparison a while back and it was cheaper to buy them locally. And that wasn't even taking into account that the local ones would actually have the capacity that they claimed they did.

I've always been fine with batteries off Ali. As long as you know to expect about half the rated capacity. The various batteries that are available now with a micro USB port in the side for charging are really handy, I replaced most of the batteries I use with them and they're surprisingly good.

i ordered a laptop charger that should arrive soon (it says it's "in my country" anyway), it was less than 10 euros including shipping so we'll see. it's for an old laptop so if it explodes i can live with it

If you only get half the capacity, you should only pay half price. What with the cheap and good IKEA batteries I can get a bus drive away, I'm not seeing that on Aliexpress.

I don't know how it is for the Famicom version but for the Megadrive Everdrive the product is literally just the board and the reseller are the ones who put it in a cartridge shell (either donated from a real game or a repro shell) and slap a nice label on it so the cart looking different isn't necessarily a sign it's real/fake. That said there's a list of authorized resellers on Krikkz.com so I'd either use one of them and make sure you're getting the real thing or go the opposite way and grab some random $20 flashcart off AliExpress and deal with like, 3 games in the entire software library not working right.

Be careful with the MegaDrvie ones. Krikkz DOES have some DRM in their upgrading of firmware. ALso there are some things different amonst the various editions on the hardware level. I'm donating my knockoff MDEverDrive to a mate because it doesn't do one stupid niche feature I want purely for nerd-wank factor.

Plus the ones you buy locally will have things like consumer protection laws* if you get a fake or dud. For the likes of 18650s check out your local e-cig/vape shops as they will sell them. I got an LG 18650 from a local e-cig shop for the same price as ebay/amazon/CPC with just being able to walk in and buy it. *Offer not valid in third world countries and the USA

My best purchase was a set of 100 tiny compasses. I was going to use them for a lab demonstrating how "fossilized " magnetism in rock formations can show seafloor spreading. Nothing fancy, just little 1 cm compasses that only had the cardinal directions on them, but that's all I needed. Got the package and after testing a few tossed the whole lot. The needles were plastic. Didn't respond to magnetism. At all.

Counterfeit batteries are a huge fire risk, especially if you're using it in a high drain device. As others have said, you'll probably have best luck at a local vape shop. (Unless they did something dumb like buy a bunch from AE to sell individually)

Knock off batteries are super common when dealing with China and they're less sophisticated than you'd think. He actually added the borax and got them working too. Real electrolytic capacitors the size are like $0.10 each
