It also had Tier Drops, where there were four(?) areas stacked "on top" of each other in an infinite loop that I remember being really blown away by at the time.

Oh god it's the Clone Saga all over again.
Worth mentioning since it was brought up a few days ago, a release candidate for Aleph One 1.3 dropped on their github page and it has significantly nicer mouse controls, along with a more extensive in general controls menu. The "modern" mouse feel setting is really nice.

Probably worth checking out if you've been frustrated with Marathon's kinda jittery mouselook, just download the relevant exe zip if you already have the last version and replace.

Kinda wish the PPC build was still maintained, kinda feels right to be playing it on my old Mac, even if it's the wrong era.

Yeah if it died by crushing. It's the only way pain elementals could be resurrected as they didn't leave a corpse otherwise.

This reminds me that a lot of Apple II games used IKJM for up right left down when you lacked a joystick, and I always hated it and didn't know why you couldn't use the damned arrows (which were in a row, so I kinda get it in a way, since LRUD is a weird position if you're not used to it as well).

Weirdest control scheme I heard off was someone insisting that SAXZ was what he found most comfortable. That's S for forward, A and X for left and right, and Z for backward. You put your angle on the keyboard with a 45° angle, basically.

That actually feels more comfortable to me than IJKL. Doesn't really give you access to any other keys besides left shift, though!

E:

..I mean, left shift and space are readily available, so I guess you could totally play something like Wolfenstein 3-D with this. It'd be terrible compared to WASD or arrow keys, but better than the other WASD alternatives I've seen.

When you watch a CS:GO tourney on Twitch you see a lot of players angling their keyboard (although I think they still use WASD). I've also seen a video of a Fortnite streamer explaining why he plays with a vertical keyboard, but I'm pretty sure he was some kind of mutant freak.

Maybe AS for left/right, C for forward, X for backwards? If you put all your eggs into strafing your way out of trouble, it's a thing, I guess?

there's a ton of cargo culting among cs players, like how many insist on using a 4:3 resolution stretched out to fill their 16:9 monitor

more than a few times pros have died in official matches because their 4:3 resolution cropped out something in their peripheral vision they would have seen in 16:9, but they keep using 4:3 regardless

the usual reasoning i see is that "it makes the models bigger and easier to hit"

even worse are the players who carried that habit over to valorant, even though valorant has a fixed FOV regardless of resolution so 16:9 native and 4:3 stretched have the same model scale

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abygqiaupVw&t=58s

the only difference is that 4:3 stretched is uglier due to the scaling
