Don't retailers have to pay some small amount for Free Comic Book Day books? That's probably close to cost for printing.

Although yeah the bigger difference between digital and print is probably less the printing costs and more not having to cut retailers in. I doubt Comixology takes over half the cover price, I know you can get up to 70% of the cover price via self-publishing on Amazon.

The cost of FCBD stuff is generally eaten by the publisher and retailers. Those range from 10 to 45 cents if memory serves.

Some teeth long for ripping, gleaming wet from black dog gums. So you keep your eyes closed at the end. You don't want to see such a mouth up close. before the bite, before its oblivion in the goring of your soft parts, the speckled lips will curl back in a whinny of excitement. You just know it.
I'm not sure if a 99 cent digital price point is viable, but I am sure that giant megacorps Warner Bros and Disney should make it viable. Call it a loss leader if you need to, kill Marvel Unlimited as stone dead as DC Universe, add access to the digital comics catalog as a perk to HBO Max/Disney+, and just draw your revenue from the subscriptions.

How much does it cost Marvel to print a 24 page comic and ship it to a retailer? Does anyone have a close estimate?

Does Marvel do it's printing in house, or do they contract it out to another company?

A group called Quad/Graphics, if I remember right. It used to be really hard to find out who printed what, and maybe still is.

I am not a business person, but I assume that makes floppies a bit safer. Since some Disney some Disney bean counter isn't looking at the expenses of maintaining a whole print shop for such a niche product.

Yeah, I misspoke. You knew with Marvel (and DC), but it was kept hush-hush for other companies mostly because no comics company wanted their printer snaked out from under them. Here's an interesting (if old) article on it.

Before you just say well comics are x right now so if they go digital it could be a even less, you should price in the fact that they should be paying everyone like double what they are getting and then figure out a cost

They could double wages while keeping costs the same simply by having the artists also write the comics.

Terrible.

As a career plan you work at the big two long enough that your name will sell indie books that get you movie and/or tv deals that never actually happen, but still get you money, and then you continue to work at big two because you wanted to write or draw a character or team.

Writers can always try and get jobs for tv shows or whatever that are actually in production as a fall back and artists have porn/furry commissions.

Apologies if this isn't quite the thread for it, but it seems like the closest fit and I have neither the skill nor the energy to make the sort of OP a proper From Hell thread deserves.
Anyway; I finally got around to reading From Hell and I was absolutely blown the gently caress away, although my soul feels like it needs a shower. That said, I was wondering if there's any good write-ups/discussions/threads here or elsewhere that get into it.

I need input from someone else who's been reading early 80's and 90's comics. Is Timothy Truman racist or just has some huuuuuuuuuge blinspots? I very well could be over-reacting but I'm reading Hawkworld and then I checked out his Guns of the Dragons and yikes!

My guess is "a lot of blindspots". I haven't re-visited any of his work in at least twenty years, but my general impression of him was always "aging hippie" (I know he's a Deadhead). I know he's reviving Scout (his 1980s series that was kind of Mad Max, Except With An Apache Warrior As Mad Max) with his son, and it looks like he made a point to work with an indigenous artist/activist and hired two cultural consultants to work on the story with him, so at absolute worst (at present) he's a baby boomer who's trying his best not to be racist.

I can't speak to any of his older work, but if you were concerned he went full Chuck Dixon MAGA in his dotage, rest easy?

Has Willoughby Kipling ever been in anything besides Doom Patrol? the only "list of appearances" I can find for him is just literally a dozen issues of Doom Patrol

https://dcuguide.com/w/Willoughby_Kipling_Chronology

I checked Constantine on that site and it looks pretty complete except it stops at Hellblazer 300, no Doom Patrol (which isn't surprising, since not being able to use Constantine is the entire reason Kipling exists)

Every few weeks, I dip into the upcoming release list on Comixology and pre-order my trades for the next month or so. Did that this morning, and gosh did I miss doing that during the heat of the “pencils down” period.

The bummer is that DC doesn’t put their listings up more than a week or two ahead, but at least I’ve got the next Daredevil, Sex Criminals and X-Men trades to look forward to.

He's just fundamentally a Constantine rip-off, I figured some writer in the decades since his appearance would have been a little meta and had them meet. They ostensibly exist in the same universe now, right? So they should be aware of each other.

Willoughby Kipling exists because Grant Morrison was told he couldn't use John Constantine in his Doom Patrol run.

quote:

Willoughby Kipling was created because, at the time that his story was being written, editorial would not allow Grant Morrison to use John Constantine in his run on Doom Patrol (Volume 2) for fear of spoiling the realism of the character. Rather than base his replacement character on Sting's appearance (like Constantine was), Kipling is meant to look like Richard E. Grant's character Withnail in Withnail and I. Later, Phil Foglio was forced to create Ambrose Bierce when he was refused the use of both John Constantine and Willoughby Kipling.
I guess you could do something meta with the three of them, but by you already explicitly had "The Trenchcoat Brigade" of Constantine, Phantom Stranger, Mister E, and Doctor Occult, so adding two more parodies/photocopies into the group might have seemed excessive.
