For the fact that it sold a fucktillion copies, yeah, it's like Pink Floyd's fourth best album. Animals is the best prog rock album that exists, Wish You Were Here is a million times better than Dark Side of the Moon, The Final Cut has that pure white boy angst you want from the genre.

I like Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

The songs are a sensible length and it's got this whimsical vibe that their later albums mostly lack.

Hmm. I'm a musical caveman and I don't much like prog rock in general, but yeah, I'd pick a band like Gentle Giant over Pink Floyd. Oh, and definitely early Rush. Does that even count as prog? They had some sick riffs and were occasionally able to keep the aimless noodling to a minimum

Prog rock seems like an excuse for very smart and thoughtful people to huff their own farts, like it's the STEM of music? Is that accurate? I don't listen to it much but that's the impression I get from out here

I wouldn't compare it to STEM (lol 'thoughtful'), maybe more sociology and especially philosophy if we're using the university metaphor.

It's all good, everyone should be listening to the music that speaks to them and makes them, personally, feel alive. Doesn't matter if it's Mozart or Crazy Frog.

Yeah, pretty much.

Source: I have listened to prog rock my whole life, mostly because that's what my dad likes. I had a Dark Side of the Moon shirt in my twenties, which I loved, but it was also a magnet for weird creepy older guys who just needed to come tell the 20-something blonde girl how cool and great she is and also I'll just invite myself to rubbing her shoulders, that's totally a fine and normal thing to do.

I didn’t know until about a year or so ago that Dirty Dancing was a period piece, taking place in (iirc) the late ‘50s/early ‘60s

i know so little of prog rock that I have no idea if Gentle Giant was a big deal or not. I just assumed they were since they have a fairly lengthy Wikipedia page

Should have become a punk instead and we'd all just be lying on the dance floor together, passed out for various potential reasons

e: See, another difference is that I have owned a Sonic Boom Six t-shirt for over a decade, it's in excellent condition somehow and I still wear it regularly, and zero (0) people have ever made a remark about it during all that time, which I only mind a bit since it's good for my punk cred

e2: I have left my house several times during that period, so it's not just that

e3: thinking about it, being an unattractive guy in his twenties instead of a blonde girl in her twenties probably played a big role too

To be honest, I was listening to a lot of Mozart and Benny Goodman in high school, but I think I was also just a little too young for punk's peak years.

Can still do the passed out on the dance floor thing, though.

Gentle Giant are basically the band you find after exhausting the big name English prog acts of that era (Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, ELP). They are the best of the next tier that also includes bands like Camel or Van der Graaf Generator.

Stuff like Rush and most Pink Floyd is prog as hell but it felt like the complexity was always in service to creating a very specific emotional response. King Crimson (E:Except "Epitaph", that song rules) just felt like a math professor trying to have a conversation and failing.

When you internalize enough music theory every song in the past 75 years sounds the same and your choices start looking like prog rock, free jazz, and Tuvan throat singing to hear something different.

Prog rock is upper-middle class white boy angst put to overly complicated music. Animals (an album I absolutely love btw) is about "oh no is there no more to life than just being a successful wage earner? Are we really all just sheep? Are the government pigs?!?"

Yes, yes, and yes, trenchant insight there. Philosophy majors huffing their own farts is a better comparison, as pointed out upthread.
