i guess i shouldn't be shocked anymore, but that's literally two different things that i thought were generally recognised as completely unacceptable in grading (curve and algo) happening at the same time, it just seems obviously insane

this whole thing is a great example of whats completely hosed about "algorithms and machine learning can automate social systems and make them objective!", just naked as there's no silicon valley veneer on it its nothing but a way to mechanize bias

The teachers in private institutions are financially incentified to give their students better grades because Tory donors pay their wages and young Harold is obviously far more worthy than that strange girl down the road, Priti I think her name is? . . . . . . Sorry, was just trying to channel a Tory, I think I got it mostly right.

V. Illych L. posted:i don't understand what he's even trying to do here, who's he speaking to with this message? are daily mail readers that gung ho on schools opening? yes, probably. I am desperate for my son to return to school, if it is safe. That’s a pretty important qualifier. Of course, it depends in part on a track and trace system. Thank god ours is world-beating.

parents are really loving desperate to not have to look after their kids all day. to the point it's affecting their judgement and making them willing to accept obvious bullshit at face value. jokes on them I don't have kids and the only think I'm desperate for is to shuffle off this mortal coil.

Wait let me see if I've got this straight. With school basically canceled for a year because of COVID, in the UK the schools are just... automatically assigning students grades? And naturally the poor ones are being given arbitrarily worse scores?

Out of pure spite too. With all the foreign students staying home the competition for places at UK Unis is bound to be at an all-time low. On the other hand, maybe that's part of it? Give UK kids lovely grades to create lots of spaces at UK Unis to make more room for high-fee paying foreign students? Is that too tinfoil?
