I find that I enjoy Final Frontier more than Undiscovered Country as time rolls on. It's a fun movie, very much in the vein of an original TOS episode, and it has some charming character moments. Kirk also wrestles for a bit with a 3 breasted cat woman... so there's that.

I'd watch it any day over the absolute dogshit JJ trek movies which make my brains want to run out of my nose.

lol that episode where Riker is accused of murder is bonkers. I wish the answer to the mystery wasn't merely the phaser beam bounced off the teleportation field and hit the reactor core but whatever. Also Riker's rape attempt scene is really weird and disturbing, "you're like a princess in a high castle!" :stare:

any particular time I should watch Star Trek: Generations? I've seen a bunch of TOS, most of the movies before the 90s, and a big chunk of S1,S3 TNG.

Picard/Kirk being in the same movie sounds epic, but I'm guessing it wasn't executed well because no one ever talks about it.

It was the first Trek I saw in the cinema, so it'll always have a special place in my heart.

Honestly I thought the lighting on the Enterprise was always too dark in that movie, I mean just having the TV show look wouldn't have worked either but there had to have been a better middle ground between eye searing brightness and vantablack

Also turn in your nerd card if you didn't immediately recognize the reused stock footage from the show, it's a real shame they didn't film more beauty shots of the six foot model for the movie since the new paint job and lighting made it look incredible in it's handful of new scenes. Extra points if you can tell when it's the CG model they built.

It's a piece of JUNK!
I really tried to go into The Final Frontier with an open mind a few months ago, but it's just a confused movie all around. They obviously had a directive to add comedy to it because of ST4, even though the plot doesn't really support it, and it comes off way more goofy in those moments as a result. Meanwhile, the commentary on God / religion never really amounts to anything (even the average TOS episode did it better) and the effects are really distractingly bad. I enjoy some individual scenes, but as a whole it just doesn't come together. ST3 is not much better, overall, but it is much more coherent.

The only redeeming thing for me is the Kirk/Spock/McCoy scenes. It’s still the worst TOS film by a wide margin.

It's definitely improved by Picard's interpretation where the shockwave is moving through the romulan empire over the course of decades and the billions of refugees have to be moved and stay ahead of it and the whole situation fractrured and the deadline is looming for many people but moving that many people out of the way in time is a mindblowing task.

I've seen some interesting arguments before that Geordi should have been Chief Medical Officer and Crusher should have been head of engineering, since it would have played more to the character quirks of both (and actually given Geordi's special eyes something to do day to day).

Big Mean Jerk posted:

Ehhh at least with the TNG engine room they had the common sense to hide a lot of that with sparse lighting and shadows so that the warp core dominated your view. The ST09 brewery is lit up like a Christmas tree because they’re still just using whatever fluorescent lights they already had installed. It wouldn’t look anywhere near as bad if they had actually lit it like a professional movie. They even fixed the issue later in the film when Scotty’s flying through the water tubes! It still looks like poo poo but it doesn’t look like they were literally filming in a brewery.

That scene where Bones and Kirk go down to wherever Uhura is by the giant vats has to be the ugliest set dressing in the entire franchise.

Also, that part where it's obvious concrete floors throughout.

Mmm, that did always kinda bug me, to be honest. It's one of those things where these days they probably would've done a bit of CG set extension.

I like how Lower Decks took advantage of the medium to make an engineering that was basically TNG but at a scale that seems appropriate.

Common Federation technology in Star Trek prior to a certain point was always depicted as being pretty much idiot-proof and completely safe unless someone was shooting the ship with torpedoes, and I never had much issue with how the TNG warp core was portrayed. It's one of the major conceits of Star Trek that everyone has access to some pretty wild poo poo that's very user-friendly.

Then later on we discover that the engine room is filled with flesh-eating gas and so on. And the holodeck is a whole other bag of cats that if you were too clever for your own good would create lethal phantasms that could become sentient organic life and leave the holodeck.

Yeah but that only happened the... You said organic right? Right. Only happened the one time.

Honestly the holodeck tech is one of the things in Trek that would make more sense if they just said it was alien magic. "Yeah, some 8th dimension space wizard gave it to us and showed us how to control it with the computer but it takes a special kind of genius to understand how it really works."

How else do you have half of the crew wandering around an entire Oirish countryside that's in a 20*30ft room.

They did this in X-Men. The Shi'ar turned the danger room into a holodeck that nobody knew was sentient. The Professor was the only one that could hear it and once it realized that he was just ignoring it, it got mad and tried to kill everyone.

I assume this is how a Star Trek plot sounds to outsiders.

If you know enough about TNG through cultural osmosis this is fine, but there's a few TNG episodes that set the tone for DS9's major plot arcs that you'd be remiss in skipping. You don't necessarily have to watch all of TNG, but these episodes are at least a good idea.

Season 5, episode 3 - Ensign Ro. It sets up the whole Bajor occupation and Starfleet's non-assistance with it.
Season 6, episodes 10/11 - Chain of Command: a good couple of episodes focusing heavily on Cardassians
Season 6, episode 24 - Second Chances. Introduces a character who shows up in DS9. Not explicitly necessary but it will help lessen later confusion.
Season 7, episode 15 - Lower Decks. More Cardassia/Bajor stuff, and told through the lens of otherwise random ensigns instead of the senior staff. This episode was the inspiration and namesake for the cartoon series airing right now.
Season 7, episode 20 - Journey's End. I'm gonna be honest, I haven't seen this one in a long while but it's one of those uncomfortable "native american" allegory episodes Trek was so fond of in the 90s. Unfortunately it also sets up a major DS9 and Voyager plot point.
Season 7, episode 24 - Preemptive Strike. Pays off the setups from Ensign Ro, and Journey's End.

Most of these aired alongside early DS9 episodes. I'd say watch them during seasons 1 and 2, prior to the Maquis 2 parter in DS9, except Preemptive Strike, which you should watch after. If you don't wanna watch them, look up a plot summary, I guess. Memory Alpha (the ST wiki) goes into way too much detail about the plot of 90% of episodes so avoid those if you take this route.

I'm also going to say you should watch "Disaster", season 5 episode 5. It's not super important but one of the best jokes in DS9 plays off it so it's worth it.
