A trick against enemy spies is to not have a single infantry unit yourself, not even dogs. Then they can't disguise themselves, and any tank or base defence will kill them without your supervision.

Love that whole intro cutscene. Yuri's dramatic turn in the oversized chair, General Vladimir shining his shoes with the US flag, the whole "bad guy" faction getting the best cutscenes is still holding true by far. Anyway, really not sure what was up with those invincible GIs by the village, I don't remember anything like that happening back in the day. And wow, those were some impressive numbers of Allied units being sent in, this definitely looks like a mission where hard difficulty makes a huge difference. Solid mission though, and a nice intro to the lovely Apocalypse Tank. If the Prism Tank is my favorite Allied unit, then the Apoc. Tank is tied with an upcoming unit for my favorite Soviet unit. Out of all the Mammoth Tank's seen (TD, RA1, and TS), RA2s version of it is the best by a mile. Crazy strong armor, a deadly main twin cannon, and finally anti-air/infantry missiles that both pack a punch and actually have some range on them. Super slow speed though but with such good hp and armor that generally doesn't matter, and they just can flat out roll over anything more or less.

What really makes the Soviet cutscenes more fun over the allies is that everyone is just chowing down on the scenery as opposed to only the President doing it in the Allies. Even Zofia is more hammy than Eva.

Carville chowed down on toothpicks and remains the best. I still can't believe General Carville is loving dead. And as for the quirks pointed out in this mission: your flak cannon built with half health because it was in the middle of its construction animation as the oil tech building blew up, and there is AOE explosive damage whenever those die. So even though your flak cannon was not yet clickable to see its health, it took damage that showed up once it was a functional structure. Buildings are built at full health but can be damaged in their construction animation, most commonly seen when your guys focus down new AI buildings while attacking their base. As for the invincible GI, I have seen that rarely happen on AI GIs that paradrop in. They go from the parachute animation directly to deploying and setting up sandbags when they touch the ground and, if I had to guess, there is some kind of hiccup in the transition from "can only take damage from anti-air attacks while parachuting" to "can only take damage from anti-ground attacks on the ground" and they end up in a limbo where they just don't take damage. Looking at the formation of those GIs they likely were paradropped and deployed upon landing and one of them glitched out. I'm not sure if they can be run over or not but its annoying when it happens.

Hmm, make sense regarding the Oil Derrick. As for the paradrops, unless there's something I'm missing about the quirks of GIs, we'll see in the next video why I don't think that is necessarily correct.

Like I said, its rare-- enemy GIs do the instant deploy thing from paradrops all the time and usually die like normal, but I've encountered the glitch in skirmishes and that was always how it appeared to have happened. I've never seen other units be invincible (without legitimate cause like from the Iron Curtain) than GIs. But if there's another reason I'd be curious to see it!

The allied arsenal is much more micro-intensive, though, and the basic soviet units are better for early rushes, while the better allied units are expensive and late.

the hardest thing to micro is the 1-3 repair IFVs you should have in any given blob. protip: use the Guard order for the repair IFVs. they will automatically "attack" (ie repair) any valid target (ie damaged tank)

Still love Apoc. Tanks though, they are just such a perfect evolution of the Mammoth Tank line, and I always and forever will love Mammoth Tanks.

Yeah, a handful of escorting Rocketeers just shred V3s, and if the Allies have good map vision, which is pretty easy with all their fast units and of course the Spy Satellite building, some Harriers can also fly out and pop any V3s that dare to leave the safety of the Soviet base. Flak Troopers and Apoc. Tanks can anti-air, but are slow and Harriers should be able to quickly get in and out with only modest damage. Flak Tracks are a bit more of a threat to air, but they melt vs Prism Tanks insane range, so either way is a tough to deal with.

the thing about combined arms is, there's always a counter of some sort and rocketeers in particular are both incredibly fragile and annoying enough that you actually do want to have your inexpensive hard counter around. pound for pound, a critical mass of prism tanks is absolutely deadly and a vigilant allied player can almost certainly re-counter the soviets' very few answers to it, but if you're building the prism blob you're probably not investing in a significant force of rocketeers. harriers provoke a worse emotional reaction to me, though, so that's probably been used to greater effect

Its a little misleading 'cause the game doesn't mention that Desolators can damage any vehicle, its just that heavy vehicles like the Apocalypse Tank don't take as much as, say, an IFV. It also doesn't tick at the same rate as regular infantry, iirc.

The radiation effect of deployed Desolators stack, so having a group of them walk one tile, deploy, walk another, deploy, makes them capable of burning through even heavier tanks in short order.

Honestly never used Desolators that much, but they are an incredibly effective way to just say NO to a sizable area for infantry and lighter vehicles. Course the whole friendly fire of em does make them tricky to properly use, plus sadly they don't gain any rank-ups from being deployed. Anyway, once again I love when you play the same map again with a twist, and this one doesn't disappoint. Love the change up of being rewarded for destroying instead of repairing the various monuments and notable buildings, and that little Soviet base always showing up is great to see. The hostile Soviet forces once again have pretty vulnerable mining, but until you deal with it, expect them to pump out a good number of units, and your base location is pretty wide open minus a few bunkers. However, Apoc. Tanks just kinda crush anything and everything once they are in even modest numbers, so as long as you can survive to build them, this one isn't too hard. Do like the huge bonus area you can discover down south of the map though, shame that you pretty much have to fight through the brown Soviet base first to get it, but with the cash from it, building an Apoc. army will be easy.

Promotion boxes are shared between all nearby units. I bet if you rushed the hidden trucks near the Lincoln Memorial with a handful of apocs (as a challenge, just the first 2) you could turn them all elite and steamroll the map. Or maybe use them to show off, I don't know, elite V3s or something.

While I was never amazing at deploying them I always loved to use Desolators in skirmish because I loved the voice clips they had. That heavy breathing is forever burned into my memory
